Phone call is no good you need it in writing & to know if they are going to repay the overpaid tax & correct the P45. (I believe that legally they can't) But it depends if they have actually done one yet. I repeat you need it in writing or they can go fish.

and thank you for the advice.
They rang me so that the email wouldn’t be a shock! They have communicated in writing ….
I have gone back and asked for a full breakdown of what they paid me, what they taxed me, if the amount I’m supposed to return also includes that tax they shouldn’t have taken off me etc. I’ve also asked for my P45 to be amended as it won’t come to me until the February payroll as they forgot to do it in the January one …!When I got home hubby’s van is sick - he tried to turn it off and it didn’t! Probably the barrel in the ignition system …. Crossing our fingers that it’s a cheap fix.
That’s our 3 things now? Right?Otoh, and in the interests of trying to stay positive:
I got home from work in the daylight for the first time this year
Harvested the tops of my purple sprouting, that I managed to grow from seed for the first time, for dinner and it was lush

Well done for dealing with this. Too many ex employers think they can just shrug you off.

Urgh, what a nuisance about the wages! Hope it gets sorted out for you. Well done on the brocoli though! You've reminded me I have some sprouts growing in the garden (well, I did at one point, goodness knows what state they're in now!)4

I might be wrong but I believe there is a condition about receiving it in good faith (ie you had a reasonable expectation that they [ie their professional payroll systems and staff] had got this right, and that means you do not have to pay it back. There are a whole bunch of other factors (like whether you need to stay friendly with them) that might persuade you otherwise.
However, I believe you fulfilled your legal obligation by telling them your last day of service and it is up to them to get it right if provided with the correct information. If you read Martin's blog/post about repaying the overpaid pensions of deceased relatives that continue to be paid after they were notified of death, I think it is the same legal principle.

@Suffolk_lass - maybe it’s legal that I keep it, but it wouldn’t sit well with me. It’s not my money after all. (I do appreciate that I am lucky to be comfortable enough that I can think like this.)
The good news is that, thanks to the advice here, they have now clarified that I will have to pay £814 or so (they will confirm the exact amount on 17th / 18th) as opposed to the original £1100 or so! Still a bit fed up with the whole thing, but yes, I do want to stay on good terms with them.Other good news is that the IT guru has been tonight and he’s poked and prodded at the laptop and it is now now charging! On one level this is *very* frustrating (he did nothing different than I did!) but also a huge relief. He says he will only charge me 30 minutes of his time for tonight. We are going to do a test on how the battery lasts - if less than 15 minutes it should be replaced, if up to an hour we can leave it for a while yet.Hubby has googled and YouTube’d and ordered a new barrel from Am*zon for £20 which should arrive tomorrow. I gave him the head’s up on the T&Cs around A’s ‘free’ trial of Pr*me so he doesn’t get stung for that. He will cancel it once the barrel has arrived and is working again ….So, a better day today

Good morning all
I am slowly getting to grips with the new job and am starting to surface with some spare mental capacity to do things that matter to me outside of work.
I am pleased that I have sustained my financial / budget tracker. I seem to have settled into a routine of updating it every weekend. I suspect it would be better if I did it more frequently, but keeping it going at all, is good enough for me, for now.
Grocery spend is on target to stay within budget - with 2 shops left to the end of the month I am at 43%. Due to tiredness I have been overbuying some things and not buying other things - so I am awash with teabags and spicy wedges but have no frozen chips!I haven't done any tilly-tidying yet this month, I think because I don't have a reminder anywhere. I have a 'becoming-epic' spreadsheet that I have reminders embedded in (things like 'Check Amazon, PayPal, C/Cd etc. for spends') so I think one of my goals for today will be to do a tilly-tidy *and* add a reminder to my spread sheet
Weather is dire today - stormy and wet and its is my best friend's birthday. I would normally have taken her out somewhere but she is packing to move house, her mother (who she lives with and cares for) is struggling and with the weather going out doesn't seem much fun. So I am taking cakes (one I made yesterday from some over-ripe bananas that otherwise would have gone in the compost bin) around to hers for a brew and a natter. Just must do all my chores before I go as I will be useless for anything much when I get back
I am enjoying the decluttering challenge I am doing off-board for myself. I've now got to 41 items including 5 lbs lost since ChristmasThis last is really cheering to me as I have reached 'that age' where weight goes on and is reluctant to leave!
Right, Tilly-Tidy time!

Tilly-Tidy done - £3.72 takes my Current account balance to a round £10.
Reminder added to my spreadsheet and glitch in a formula spotted and tidied up.
Even after I send back the over-pay I received, my savings balance will still be £4874.25, so not dreadful (it needs to be more but having some is a start for me!). I should also be on budget to put some extra into savings at the end of the month even if not a huge amount. It depends on what my new monthly salary will be and whether my car allowance has kicked in or not.

<delurking to tell you something you probably already know>
You can freeze bananas in their skins for later cake making when they get black/too ripe for eating. Then thaw overnight in fridge, squish out the bananeryness from the skins and away you go. I do this and apples that are bruised also go in whole, then thaw in my 2Litre measuring jug. I have also thawed the fruit quickly in the microwave 1 min on high, then another minute on high - I CBA with the defrost setting as it takes too long.

I peel overripe bananas before freezing them in a tub, then I only need to get out the quantity required and they defrost relatively quickly or I can zap them in the microwave. I find peeling first is less messy.Fashion on a ration 2025 0/66 coupons spent
