If you cancel, then all appropriate payments are forfeited regardless of flight only or a genuine package deal - there is a sliding scale of lost payments in the later case.
Hopefully your friend's employer may be sympathetic to her predicament, or a colleague might be willing to do a shift swap ?
What about transfers and accommodation costs - they will be in jeopardy if you fail to travel ?
