New Boiler - Ideas and suggestions

Good afternoon all,

Few days ago I woke up and I didn't have warm water nor heating. I did call British Gas straight away and they sent an engineer who came to have a look. The engineer managed to fix the warm water but he said it was not possible to fix the heating since he couldn't control the temperature. He suggested to get a new boiler since mine is 20 years old now, and it's not in the best conditions (also the display screen is not working which is not helpful). The one I have now is an Ideal isar HE30.

British have quoted me several boilers but they are very expensive (around 2.5k).

After doing some research online, I have found some others around 2k (Worcester Greenstar 4000 25kw for example), which they have 12 years warranty and they seem quite decent. However, I don't have a big knowledge of boilers and I would like to know if you know any site where I can get one (boiler + installation) for a reasonable price, and if there is any boiler I should avoid.

Many thanks!

Get a second (and third) opinion.  BG would much rather flog you a new boiler (at sky high prices) rather than fix an existing one.
If you do go for a new boiler, a local established supplier with a reputation to protect is likely to be a better choice.

Here are my bookmarks.  I can't vouch for them, they may be saints or sinners, you'll have to do your research and make up your own mind.  However, it may give you an idea of what's on the market.
  • Hi Gerry,

Many thanks for your quick response - I am thinking to stay away from British Gas due to their high prices. I have got a price from Boiler Central for a Worcester, but it's also close to 2k (although it's 12 years warranty which seems quite good).

I will speak with some local people as you mention, let's see what they suggest.

Cancelling you boiler service contract with BG will help pay for your new boiler. Just put some money aside each month to cover the annual service and for "rainy day" repairs.

Thanks also for your reply Verdigris. At the moment I am paying 102.50 GBP monthly to them (BG) for Gas + Electricity. I will need to check how much I am paying ofr the boiler service and if it's worth keeping or not anymore.

Last time I paid for my mum's annual boiler service, it was about £70.

See, you've nearly paid for the boiler already!

Bear in mind that in order to get the 12 year warranty you will almost certainly also have to install a (Worcester) magnetic filter & have an annual service as conditions.
If you also install Worcester controls (ideally load & weather compensating) they too will be covered by warranty for the warranty length of the boiler.

Don't know about the magnetic filter, but you will need annual service to maintain 12 year warranty. You'll also need to use WB accredited installer. Neither was a problem for us and around £80+VAT pa buys us peace of mind.

OTOH £96pa for 12 years is more than the ~£1000 price of a new boiler.
