This could have nothing to do with computers

All you need is a clone (photograph even) of the barcode on the back of someone's nectar card, or a way to generate one from the card number.

Go to Sainsburys, shop, go to self serve checkout, scan clone barcode photo, choose 'redeem.points' at the payment screen

Hadn't thought of that but it does seem entirely possible.. although they'd have to be pretty good to take a clear photo of your card without you noticing.

Might not have happened that way with you, but just bear in mind there is no PIN or anything with a nectar card and so anyone who can copy the card barcode can use it to pay for their shopping at the self-service till.

If the barcode is simply your card number then anyone who gets your nectar card number can create a barcode without even having to go to the trouble of taking a photo.

I have just redeemed some nectar points and received an e-mail instantly - same time stamp as the receipt - showing how many points redeemed and retailer.
