- fairly light room (QLED rather than OLED?)
- not used for gaming
- general tv, sports and film
- possibly wall mounted in time but currently at eye height circa 3m from sofa
- Budget was £800-900 but could extend to the £1,149 if really worth it. No more.
Considering the following but unsure if the jump from £799 to £1,149 is worth it, although the latter looks lovely in the shop.
Option 1 SAMSUNG QE50Q80AATXXU 50" Smart 4K Ultra HD HDR QLED TV with Bixby, Alexa & Google Assistant
Option 2 SAMSUNG QE50QN94AATXXU 50" Smart 4K Ultra HD HDR Neo QLED TV with Bixby, Alexa & Google Assistant
Help!
Please ask any relevant questions as I appreciate I have only provided fairly limited info.
Without looking too closely at the specs, I would surmise that the main difference between the two TVs, is that the latter utilises Mini-LED in the screen. The other doesn't. It's likely almost as simple as that.
LG's version is named QNED. BUT, neither of them introduced the technology. In fact it was first introduced to the market by TCL.
So if you want the benefits of Mini LED without paying over a Grand for it, look at TCL. The problem is the smallest version released here is 55". Though it's at your lower price point. https://www.costco.co.uk/TVs-Electronics-Security/Televisions-Projectors/Televisions/TCL-55C826K-55-Inch-Mini-LED-QLED-4K-Ultra-HD-Smart-Android-TV/p/3695351 -
The Q80 is only QLED the QN94A is Neo QLED which is even better and what I have, QN have much smaller LED's. The Q80 has a peak brightness of 1000 nits and the QN94A has 2000 nits, so much brighter..adonis10 said:
Awesome, thanks. Yeah it’s going to be in a fairly light room - big bay windows at front of lounge and knocked through to dining room where light comes through the back door windows, and 3 lamps on when dark so I think it classes as fairly light. Everyone I’ve spoken to, bar one person, has suggested QLED for this reason. Guess the choice is now the 799 v 1149 version!RumRat said:I own a Samsung QN95A and it's amazing to be honest. If your room is bright, it will be better for you than an OLED which cannot match it for brightness. The blacks are really black and the colour reproduction is fantastic. I have an OLED in the house also and in a dark room, that is an outstanding picture, but, put it into the lounge to watch daytime TV and you could really tell the difference.
At the end of the day each to their own. I don't recommend one technology over the other, both are amazing. IMO it's where you are going to use the TV that needs considering to get the most from them.
Also the Q80 has 4 speakers and IMO you will be better off with a Soundbar, the QN94A has 8 speakers and you can actually get away without a soundbar, but, that choice will be up to your personal opinion....

The TCL Mini LED above actually claims the same as the the QN94A for peak brightness. No surprise, since it's the same technology behind it. Mini LED and Quantum Dot. Samsung just uses a fancy name, but that's what it is.RumRat said:

Samsung doesn't have Dolby Vision; TCL doesn't have HDMI 2.1.
Depends on what is important to you.
There is little doubt that the Samsung is a superior product. More dimming zones for an instance. But then it is £350 more.
So if the choice is between the cheaper Samsung and the TCL 826k(slightly inferior to the 825k), then I would give consideration to the TCL for the expected superior picture quality. It has a built in Soundbar.
Worth a demo at least.

We bought the 55 inch version of that above LG TV. (LG LG-OLED55C14LB) last June from RIcher Sounds. We are very pleased with it. It works well in a bright living room.
Our only gripe is that we paid £1,699 for it and it is now down to £1,179 but such is life.
A man walked into a car showroom.
He said to the salesman, “My wife would like to talk to you about the Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
Salesman said, “We haven't got a Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
The man replied, “You have now mate".1 -
Fair point about RS, I think they’re great. However, I have a £400 currys voucher from a past issue with a dishwasher (not currys fault, just a write off by know how) so I’m kind of stuck there as need to use that.Money_Grabber13579 said:I can’t comment on the specs as I’d face exactly the same dilemma but I can say that I wouldn’t buy from curry’s and would go to richer sounds instead. So much easier to deal with, especially if something goes wrong (which it hopefully won’t).0 -
Please don't take this amiss, but why does a 42" TV need upgrading? We use a 32" one, which seems plenty big enough, and we were just planning to keep using it until it breaks down. Am I missing out on anything important?
This one, by the way.

No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?1 -
I totally agree with this. Would only buy a TV from Richer Sounds or John Lewis (free 6 and 5 year warranties respectively). My friend recently had an issue with his 5.5 year old TV from Richer Sounds having a blue tinge to the picture. No quibble, they came and collected, repaired and redelivered within 2 weeks. Great service in my book. Try doing that painlessly with Currys!!Money_Grabber13579 said:I can’t comment on the specs as I’d face exactly the same dilemma but I can say that I wouldn’t buy from curry’s and would go to richer sounds instead.
