    Thanks everyone!
@zafiro1984 thanks for warning me about the supermarket ones. I found some info about garlic varieties so I'll make a decision in the next few weeks. I had no idea they could store for so long if you get the right type.

I'll have a look at some magazines too. :)

My chilli collection is growing nicely on my window sill. Hopefully they'll fruit well eventually.

This is a good little youtube clip about growing curing and storing garlic - I always thought you could store both types but you needed to grow the right sort. I believe the frost of winter really helps them get away if you are growing hardneck

Thanks for all the info about the garlic! I also didn't know about the different types. Will go hunt for the card that came with the one's i already planted to see which one it is.

I am new to gardening and just got my first allotment end of August. Still a lot of work and prep to do and no clear plan of what to grow. However i am growing for the last couple of years in bags cucumbers, tomatoes, strawberries and some spices. Tried garlic and union, but failed miserably, also the foxes were constantly digging out the bags and the grow box.

Look forward to learning more and growing more fruit and veg at the allotment.

@Vesmari I recommend the allotment book by Caroline Foley for clear and straightforward advice on what to have where, including compost heaps, shelter for soft fruit and rotation crops - worth a secondhand copy or a library borrow

  • Is there room for a complete newbie? Wanting to start growing as much as I can this year, super small space but bought some tomato seeds for my sisters conservatory! Quite excited to see what I can do. Currently looking into what potatoes to buy for containers.

@seabirdsandseaweed we all started as a newbie. Any potatoes work in tubs, I grow mine in the £1 supermarket bags and use supermarket spuds.

I've had a semi productive weekend, I've mostly done my plan, I know what's going where in my raised bed, I have planned what is being container grown, and what is going in ground, there will probably be a few changes though. I got on Wilkos site earlier and ordered my seed potatoes, onion sets, onion seeds, and more garlic, and a few of their cheap "clever" pots, I got some last year and they are very robust, I haven't bothered with any of the accessories yet but they have a good range to convert the pots for any use, this year they'll just have some flowers. I also bought the how to garden grow month by month magazine with 15 packets of free seeds with only one pack I don't think I'll use at all, and one pack I'm undecided on, not too bad for £8.99 and I had a gift card so it cost me nothing.

This week I'll be doing a final tidy up of the growing areas, taking a seed and pot inventory, and adding all of my plans to my calendar using last years timings as a starting point, and checking how my compost is coming along so I can work out how much I'll need to buy in, along with hoping a bargain greenhouse shows up locally. It feels like the growing season is actually starting now.

Finally did my seed audit and ordered what I think I need. I also want two small packs of seed potatoes (10 to a pack) and an onion set of something larger than shallots, and two particular lettuce varieties but I will wait until I can go out (isolating until Sunday) next week for these. Next week I also plan to start clearing the dead detritus from my greenhouse and patio

I've been out to my garden and onions are sprouting, much to my relief as I couldn't face another planting session.

I'm beginning to get impatient. I want to get sowing and growing.
