I have fibre to property but can’t get away from BT

Options
I had fibre installed along with other people locally 2 years ago and am happy however I don’t seem to be able to change to a different supplier as they all think there’s no fibre in our area. I tried to ask BT to update their systems to make it visible that my property had fibre and they just seemed to indicate that other companies would remove it if I changed which was not what I was hoping for.
How can I move to another cheaper supplier without potentially losing my fibre connection? When I supply my postcode and phone number they think it’s standard rental so won’t quote.

Which company are you trying to move to? Not all of them sell FTTP, especially the cheaper ones.

    Try Sky, EE or Talktalk
  • I have tried Plusnet, Sky and Virgin but all say they cannot supply because there isn’t fibre in my area. I feel trapped to BT even though Plusnet are part of BT. Not keen to go to Talktalk due to their poor reputation.

Virgin don't use the Openreach network so you will be unable to use them unless they install their network, Plusnet were due to start offering FTTP late this year but I'm not sure they they have actually launched it yet. Sky should be able to offer it unless for some reason they don't in your area or there is a systems problem

What does the BT Wholesale Availability checker say for your address? Does it say FTTP is available?

    https://www.broadbandchecker.btwholesale.com/

If so, it should be available from Sky too. How about someone like Zen? (https://www.zen.co.uk) do they show fibre is available?
  • Thanks for that link, most of it indicates there is no fibre but there’s a one liner saying fttp to dwelling on overhead supply so maybe my online applications are not working but I need to phone. Do the other suppliers use this to see your connection status?

If your address doesn’t show Openreach fibre to the premises availability,( FTTTP)  then how did BT , who use the same OR data as everyone else ( that use OR products ) manage to set you up ? BT don’t have any special access to this info, it’s exactly the same access as others .
As already stated , show your details returned from the DSL checker…if your ( BT ) phone service is DV ( Digital Voice  ) then the phone number may not work in which case use the address option.

We've had FTTP for nigh on four years and its only been in the past 4-5 months that SKY, TT, Vodafone and a few others have been offering it where we live. Even when I've phoned them earlier in the year it was hard to get a definitive answer from them about when they were going to start offering it.

Some of the more specialised companies, like Zen and A+A were the  only one who would do it earlier but they were about the same price as BT and they didn't really have a process for transferring the service so we stayed with BT for a lot longer than I wanted to.

I'm moving from BT to Vodafone in a couple of weeks and will be getting faster speeds and unlimited phone calls for £25 a month less (I'll lose the access to BTs network when I'm out and about but TBH the very few times I've tried to use it it's been useless)

Personally never been able to find a BT network when out and about .
Only twelve months left on my FTTP contract .
  • Are you talking about real fibre that is Fibre to the premises where your router connects to a little box called an optical network termination (ONT) or so called fibre - that is fibre to the cabinet where your router plugs into a normal phone socket?
