Gas price

I have used less gas in the same month as last year and I am paying £163 more! Last years gas bill was £125 for the month and this year for the same month but using less gas my bill was £288. It’s like having a mini mortgage on top of all the other bills and I’m not sure if it would be cheaper getting electric heaters and turning the gas off?.

    1) Are the readings - last year and this year - Actual or Estimated

    2) Has a fix run out and you are now on the Standard Tariff?

£125 is implying you are using a lot of gas. What was your annual consumption ?
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

    3) On a typical tariff, electricity is around 4x or 5x the price of gas.

  • I've come looking for advice on the astronomical energy prices, I daren't tell the wife it is going to be double. But then again i am hoping that I have saved money as we had a brand new Ideal Logic C30 installed in October and the amount we are using has actually dropped. I always imagined it was just a marketing ploy to get people to buy a new boiler. I have literally had to turn the temperatures right down and our Nest tracking app is showing that it is on half the time. Definitely, something to consider. We got a great deal with one of the online boiler installation companies boiler central and they sorted everything. Luckily they had the dimensions on as I wanted a Worcester Bosch but it would have been too big and I've seen since that supplies are low apparently due to chip shortages so maybe a blessing in disguise. Hope this helps.

The figures you have quoted mean nothing. You could easily pay £10/month and think it's a fantastic deal, until next year it's bumped upto £320/month because you need to bring down your debit amount. Similar could happen if you pay too much.

We need to know your annual usage (in kWh) and unit prices to afford any meaningful advice.

BTW, if you've just finished a fixed rate offer, the price you pay for gas might have doubled, and as much as you don't want to hear this, it could easily go up by another 50% in April.

What was the price per kWh plus standing charges over 12 months previous to the last 12 months? Look at the prices last winter and compare them against the same month this year.
Someone please tell me what money is

@Manda29 hasn't been back to this thread since the 29th of December, I'm not sure she's going to see any of the recent replies.
@jimrobbo2 welcome to the forum, I see you've bumped this thread to "come looking for advice on the astronomical energy prices" with some details of your new combi boiler. As @JJ_Egan asked above, what advice are you looking for?

  • I was looking, and found the advice, but thought I'd put my two pence in on something that has helped me to help others. i am with Shell and looking forward to the nice rise in the bill. Their app is useless at the moment as it says it is still transferring even after sending readings. so, unsure what it will be but expecting a huge bill. do you have any more thoughts on this?

on gas prices moving forward... and what to do, and how to keep them down. The shell app has been useless up to now and this forum keeps coming up in searches hence the interest

    1. Expect gas prices of approx 10p/unit.
    2. Expect electric prices of approx. 40p/unit
    3. Reduce your consumption of gas and electric to keep costs down. Turn your thermostat down, start wearing a jumper if you don't do so already instead of t-shirt and shorts. Use less energy hungry devices such as electric heaters, tumble dryers, etc. Change your lighting to LED, etc, etc.
