I'm going to try the herb jelly Laura, as we have the peel and cores from seven baking apples. We have plenty of sage which I imagine will go well with the apple flavour. Presumably boil about twenty minutes then test for setting?Laura_Elsewhere said:
If you keep the apple peel and cores, then you can simmer those up and drip it overnight through muslin/jelly-bag to make a pectin-rich liquid which you can then use for a range of preserves... you can simply add it to other fruit to make jam that will definitely set; or you can fill a jar with fresh chopped herbs, then boil up the apple liquid and sugar as if making a jelly, and pour the slightly-cooled liquid over the herbs, and end up with a really lovely mint jelly, sage jelly, etc., to have with meat or cheese... actually I sometimes just have a teaspoon of my mint jelly just to refresh me on a hot day or if I'm slaving over a hot stove - it's delicious (I also add a touch of cider vinegar to mine)...Gem-gem said:I spent two hour peeling and stewing down, filled two and a half containers - apple crumble here we come. @Cherryfudge - yep, I just put sloes in a small saucepan on the hob , or in a dish in the microwave, with only just enough water to cover them, and cook on a low heat til softened, stir 'em vigorously and the stones come out, add a bit of sugar and you get a lovely stewed-sloe 'compote' to add to plain yog

I have been informed that I misunderstood. The 2.8" was our rainfall for the year including the 2.5" we've gotten in the last week.TwibbleDee said:
I think we had about 2.5". If it tells you anything, we'd only had 2.8" so far for the entire year prior to this current storm.PipneyJane said:TwibbleDee said:There is now water in our "moat" (the ditch running across the front of our property again.
The last time I remember there being rain that actually left standing water was at the end of July/beginning of August LAST YEAR. I was at an outdoor concert that got flooded in about 5 minutes for that one. It was glorious!
@TwibbleDee how much rainfall have you had? That sounds most unexpected.

Finished the summer poncho, adapted the pattern by a) using the next size up crochet hooks and b) included three extra layers. If the 10 balls of wool bought, I have only used 5.5 balls. So will have to think what I can do with the 4.5 x 50g of wool. This is the first item if clothing that I have made.

@Gem-gem, you can call it a summer poncho if you like but I reckon that looks just nice lightweight for wearing in colder months around the house without feeling like you're bundled up like the Michelin man
Not my kind of crochet, but what I can see is that you've done a beautiful job of it - lovely even tension, and I suspect this may be the first but I really don't think it *should* be the last. You clearly have an aptitude...2025 remaining: 37 coupons from 66:
