Thank you for all the knitting needle suggestions everyone! I've been busy googling as I'd not heard of Verniers or Sugru.
I don't have the ends for the various headless needles: they are inherited or job lot strays so they are unlikely to turn up. I admit I will try the easiest solution (elastic bands! Thanks @PipneyJane) first for sheer convenience but it wouldn't make a long term solution as they crumble.
Callipers would be a perfect solution for sizing and would save rummaging for a piece of holey plastic, but they cost a lot more so I'd want to justify the cost... though they probably have 101 other uses that I've yet to think of. I forgot to check the places that sell yarn when I was in town in case I can get the holey plastic without paying postage.
Meanwhile my searching has come up with a Kintsugi kit - something I'd love to try so I'm off down another rabbit hole.

I was going triggers Sugru, really useful stuff.
I have an ancient metal knitting-needle gauge which I keep attached to my needle case, but it only goes up to UK size 1, I think it's guess-work above that. (I have a conversion chart for UK, US and mm sizes).
Now come on Laura, don't keep us waiting, we want to see the skirt!Life is mainly froth and bubble: two things stand like stone. Kindness in another’s trouble, courage in your own.2 -

Thankyou all! I got quite a lot done - machined the long seams, and started assembling the back yoke; found the right lining material and started the back-yoke lining; lost and then found my coil of boning and caps...
I shall hope to do more tomorrow2025 remaining: 37 coupons from 66:

I am soaked. We were at Lord’s for the first England vs Sth Africa test match, when the rain hit at 14:13. Hung around, under our stand, until they abandoned play for the day at 16:30. Everything except my handbag - which I put under my coat - is sopping wet. However, this is the first time EVER in Britain that I have been drenched and not freezing cold.
Global warming is real, people.

- Pipalas I think you're right. I'm trying to do my bit by watering the garden with grey water and having showers not baths but it'll take us all to turn the tide.
I hope you dry off soon.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)

I've basically let everything in my little guerilla garden die. Some will come back, and one or two have surprised me by being pretty much fine - who knew snapdragons (antirrhinum) are drought-resistant?? - but many have gone. I plan to spend the winter researching and digging and really improving the soil, soil, soil, and then next year planting early, using plants and positioning that will make them far more resilient.2025 remaining: 37 coupons from 66:

My dad has a theory that once you start to water plants they get thirsty for more. So his garden which is plants in pots on gravel and very narrow borders, is doing fine mostly. Maybe he just foresaw climate change long before it was fashionable!2025 Fashion on the ration
