Laura_Elsewhere said:All the way through Ep3 of Sewing Bee I've been thinking, "all these decades I thought it was pronounced "shirring" to rhyme with "whirring" or "purring" but everyone in this, inc the two judges, is saying 'shearing' and making Alan Shearer jokes - how wrong I've been!"
Only I've just looked it up in the OED and in both British and US English it is pronounced to rhyme with whirring or purring...
I don't much fancy telling Esme and Patrick they're saying it wrong, though...
My guess with Sewing Bee is that they've been told to say it a certain way to make it funny. With the change of presenter, I was disappointed to discover that the terrible puns and jokes are obviously scripted by the production company. (I find them annoying.)

@PipneyJane, the Sewing Bee puns and jokes may be annoying but at least now they've left out the references to anal sex and butt plugs... I stopped watching because of the endless, constant sex-based comments. I've seen other Joie Lycett programmes and like him - his "Who Do You Think You Are?" was really fascinating - but the blatant endless sexual comments were just tiresome, to me.
Presumably they wanted it to be edgy?2025 remaining: 37 coupons from 66:

Yes, my secondary had all of us, mixed, doing all the practical subjects for 1st and 2nd year - woodwork, metalwork, technical drawing, sewing and cookery.
I learnt quite a bit of useful stuff in woodwork, metalwork and techie drawing; rapidly came to an arrangement with the sewing teacher just to bring my own work in (), but don't remember a single thing from the two years of cookery. I dimly recall we produced things like lasagne and pineapple upside-down cake, but have no recollection at all of ever doing anything at all. Could it have been possible that we simply sat and watched while the teacher demonstrated? I certainly never had any food I brought home.

Damn! Lost a post.
I remember us making creamed rice, scones and fried rice, but nothing ever survived long enough to be taken home. Our school's Home Economics Department included a dining area, complete with tables that we were taught to set I think we ate everything there after making it.
Incidentally, this is our classroom cookbook. I have kicked myself regularly because I don't have a copy. (The one I used was my sister's.) The only edition available on Amazon costs a fortune.

I remember my mother being outraged because they asked us to take in a packet cake mix! The idea was to cook a Victoria sponge one week, and a packet one the next and compare the two. A bit pointless because you weren’t seeing the two side-by-side. The only other thing I can remember was being taught to iron a tray cloth, and set a tray with a cup and saucer and make coffee in a percolator - not an electric one. This was completely baffling to me, as we used mugs and instant coffee at home and I don’t think I have ever used it since! It definitely didn’t teach me anything about nutrition, fortunately I could already cook quite well having been taught at home.Life is mainly froth and bubble: two things stand like stone. Kindness in another’s trouble, courage in your own.5

Oh! And I remember making ANZAC Biscuits! (So called because they were sold at fundraisers for the original ANZAC troops.) Very yummy. I really must make them again.

I went to a girls school and we had a firm grounding in CDT (craft design and technology which included those new fangled and expensive computers and power tools) as well and needlework (it really was still called that) and cookery. Some of our first lessons were making a sandwich and a hot drink. I still have the basic soup recipe as it was very good.One of my triumphs was making a ‘healthy meal’ which was a family favourite of kedgeree. I also caused mixed consternation (classmates) and acclaim (teacher) by using dried onions which I reconstituted before using in a recipe.✒️ Declutter 2025👗 Fashion on the Ration 2025 61/66 coupons (5 coupons silver boots)✒️Declutter 2024 🏅🏅🏅(DSis 🏅🏅)

Not been around so much just lately but I have bought 3xtops and 2xprs jeans, I have been trying to shop in the charity shops but I'm afraid I haven't found anything that is suitable for what I need, so bought new and spent coupons.
Tops = 15
Jeans = 12
Please correct me I have got coupons incorrect, I will amend my sig and start some catching up but that's about it tonight.
Hope you're all well and happy.

I've spent a massive 19 coupons today: a dress to wear to DD's wedding, another dress because it undoubtedly looked right on me, and a top because the fabric was so nice.
I don't think I'll be buying any more non-charity shop dresses for a while anyway because this summer's colours just don't suit me.
My coupons: I'm still sorting them out. I can't work out why my paper list and electronic list don't tally, but I know I'm still in credit.
I also succumbed to a 1935 or 1937 edition of the News Chronicle's Needlework and Crafts by Irene Davison and Agnes M. Miall. I look forward to exploring it!
And at my school girls did needlework for a year, making an apron for cookery the next year (and we had wicker baskets to carry the food home). Boys did metal work and woodwork. In the third year we could choose so I did woodwork and loved it.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)
