Universal Credit / Housing

I work part time so I get more than half my rent paid for me. It's just me and my son.
I've logged into my UC account this morning to see how much they are paying this month as it can differ slightly due to my wage.
I've got this message..... you have 1 adult living with you who is expected to pay towards the rent........... So my UC has been reduced by £75,that he's expected to pay.

After a search, it seems it's because he's now turned 21 (during the assessment period)
He's a full time college student with a bursary of £400 which of course he contributes to bills, food etc. Around £50 of that also goes on his travel.

So, my question is, can he claim anything to help with this? I also get single person Council Tax discount because he's a student.
I'm not that much better off working at the moment but if I now lose £75 I'm going to be near enough worse off.

We're in Scotland if that makes a difference.

As he's living at home with you then there's nothing he can claim to help with the rent.

Some sites I'm reading say that they won't take the deduction if he's a full time student, could that be right? I've left a message in my journal but I won't hear back for a couple of days.

I can only see that this would apply to housing benefit and not housing element of UC. https://www.entitledto.co.uk/help/non-dependants

  • Thank you, hopefully we'll sort something otherwise I'd be better off not working and he'd be better off on the dole 🙄

As a student he will be bettering himself and hopefully getting a career, on the dole no such hopes.

Yes, obviously I know that and I don't wish him to be on the dole, I was just being facetious as I'm worried about losing that amount of money.
  • Is it possible for you to increase your hours to full-time?

No, if anything I'm already thinking I can't carry on in my job because of my health, I'm just trying to keep going as long as possible.

Looking at the OP's previous threads she does have some health problems it seems.

Personally I think the onus is on your son to provide the extra money.

Does he do any part time work?  There are plenty of hospitality jobs around at the moment and it shouldn't take many hours to make £75 a month.

As he is 21 how long is he at college for?  Hopefully this will not be a long term financial problem.

Does he work? A lot of students have to work as well.
