What to do about gas oven (difficult buyer)

Hi we are selling our house and have had a buyer that has thrown his toys out the pram on a couple of occasions. We put in the inventory that we would leave our gas range oven for free. However it is past it’s best as recent the handle came off. We got someone in to fix it today but in the process they broke two of the clips holding the glass in place on the inside of the oven. The glass is now where it should be but only being held on tentatively. It doesn’t fall off but it doesn’t feel secure. Aside from this the oven works well (hob and two ovens), just need to be careful opening and closing the door due to the glass.

Should I tell the buyer about this? Should I now offer to have the oven removed? The only issue is I’m not sure we will be able to get a gas man in in time, they would basically need to come tomorrow. Are there any repercussions for me not removing the oven or declaring this now to the buyer?

As the oven is being offered free I wouldn't bother to inform the buyer. The oven is still functional and the buyer must be aware that the oven isn't in the best condition otherwise you wouldn't have offered to leave it for free.
  • It's good you are so honest.  Everything my vendor 'gifted me' is knackered, I wish she'd removed it all.

Could you contact the buyer through the EA and tell them and see what they would like to do?  If they want it removed I'm sure they'll understand most businesses are closing down for Christmas, you could leave them the cash so they can get it removed in the NY?

Agreed, when something is free it is always a risk, we left a fridge & cooker both13 years old in our last house. There was nothing wrong with them but either could have given up the ghost or still be there.
Here we got a cooker "free" that didn't turn off, you could use it but needed to turn off at the wall, we kept it for 6 months so it did us a turn.

I’d rather not leave the cash, they already threw their toys out the pram about completion date - we had to delay 13 days due to our fixed rate with the bank and this resulted in us covering some of their storage costs to appease them to the tune of £100. We have also left some nice curtains and poles for free which I regret haha! But if there are repercussions I will leave cash for it.

I would just say nothing. No way should you have to leave cash.

My brother left a fridge freezer when he sold as the new house had integrated appliances and the owners asked if it would be going so he gave it to them for free. Just over 3 months later and it packed in, the buyers got in touch with him demanding he pay for a new one. He had to request that the EA get involved to stop them contacting him, some people will try anything on.

Do nothing, just move, complying with the letter of what the inventory says - leave the oven for free.
Certainly don't leave cash for the oven to be removed - even if you did, an unscrupulous buyer would pocket the cash and still seek the disposal costs.

It actually does cost money to remove stuff that doesn't work properly. I agree it's not worth much, so personally I would tell the buyer and say you're removing it, or inform them it doesn't work properly.

I hate having to move other peoples junk - just be honest.

what type of "throwing toys out of pram" do you mean?

Lots of people leave things because it's a hassle, not because it doesn't work.

our vendors left us a range and thanked us for keeping it - and they got it cleaned for us as it was much less hassle than taking it to the new house.
