British Gas meter not pairing

Hi, my provider is British Gas, my smart meter worked ok with both gas and electricity, I have noticed the gas is now not showing on the smart meter (ihd), I have done the usual and restarted smart meter etc, but it is not connecting/pairing with gas meter. I have checked gas meter and it is working and must be sending readings to BG as I can see the usage on my app on my phone, why has it stopped pairing?
I can see a smart meter section on the right side of gas meter but cannot open it, how do I get it paired again, ringing British Gas is a pain as their call centre is in South Africa !

  • Have you checked the LED lights on the comms hub (the box that sits above the electricity meter). You should see the following

    GAS - Gas Meter

This light tells you if a gas meter is connected to the HAN. If you don’t have a gas meter installed this light will be off.

I assume when you say that you have re-started the smart meter that you mean that you have re-booted the In House Display? This is not your smart meter.

If the GAS LED light is not flashing you will need to contact your supplier. The supplier can do some things remotely but if that doesn't work then an engineer visit will be required. FWiW, mist/fog/rain can all affect the transmission range of a gas meter.
  • Thanks Delor, I haven’t checked that light yet, I assume HAN means home area network, think it will mean going through the pain of ringing up British Gas (30-40 min wait and then speaking to someone with a clue what I am talking about!)
  • Hi checked the gas light in the electric box and it is flashing, what do I need to do next?
    thanks

    How fast is it flashing?

For example, every 5 seconds, every 2 seconds, more often?

  • Hi it looks like it is flashing about every 2 seconds....

You need to calculate the time between flashes as accurately as you can:

How fast should the lights flash?

The frequency of flashing relates to the status of the function as follows:

      - Power Up

To allow the operator to see that all LEDs are working they are shown without flashing for a short period after power up.

      - Error

Fast flash rate of 2 flashes per second means that there is an error. Call your supplier if this does not change after 48 hours.

      - Transient

A flash rate of 1 flash per second means that the process is in a transient state such as making a communications connection.

      - Normal

A slow flash rate of 1 flash per 5 seconds means that the process is in its normal state.

      - Off

The communications hub is powered down.

  • Yep it’s  2 flashes per second, so I will have to ring someone in South Africa who has a clue, might win the lottery before that happens 😆
  • Have gas & electric smart meters that do not send messages to british gas or my phone app so have to do the old fashioned meter reading. When I got through to BG via online chat (this took some time but better than phone) they told me that there is a software issue & they will try to fix it. So it may be something like software try the online chat via the website it will take a while to get through unless you are lucky. The one bonus with online you can keep a record of what was said & when. Hope this helps

Sadly, suppliers have very few levers to pull. The DCC is responsible for the network and comms hubs. Individual meter manufacturers are responsible for the firmware for their meters: this includes producing the firmware and testing it on the DCC Network.
  • Bizarrely it’s just started working again 😳👍
