To stop leaky data I took the sledgehammer approach and turned everything to wi-fi only somewhere in the settings.

then turn on the ones I need, some are on permanent, some I toggle when I want them like chrome(then forget to turn them off).

with my duals sims I have the fee data one with no credit so once the data is gone it stops working unless I switch to one with credit(or more data)

"You would have thought that there would be a simple facility to only allow data use when connected to wifi but I guess not. "

Yes you can do this - turn off mobile data and turn on wifi. The phone will only use data when connected to wifi

That said, it is not super expensive to get a contract with some data allowance, so maybe that would be an option to look at.

Yes, but as explained above, if I do this texts can not be received over the GPRS network.  We're going to give it a month or so and see if any data is being used while my Dad is out and about - if this is insignificant than we'll leave it be otherwise may look to getting a tarriff with a small monthly data allowance.

And their texts could be received OK when your Dad used a Nokia 6021?

Yes, no problem at all.  The only reason for him switching to the Moto G5 was so that he could show his Covid Pass to get into the football.

Maybe those senders' Google Messenger apps realize that the Nokia doesn't have Google Messenger app installed.
So they automatically send (or re-send) the "enhanced" texts as "ordinary" SMS.

    How about...
With the Moto5, uninstall Google Messenger app (which has the chat option).
So it shows as "Disabled" in App Info.

Replace it with an alternative app that doesn't have a chat option.
And set the alternative app as the Default app.

I use QKSMS app, afaik it doesn't have a chat option.

Then send a text from your Moto7 using Messenger app with chat switched ON.
See if it's received by the alternative app on the Moto5 immediately (with Data and wi-fi not connected).

Thanks for this - will be a while before I can get to his phone.  Curremtly seeing if his phone is using any data when out of the house, if it isn't or not using much will leave as is as trying to drag him into the 21st century to use other Apps!

I've thought some more about this...

When Google Messages app has Chat Features turned ON it sends texts over Data/wifi to recipients who also use Google Messages app with Chat Features turned ON.
If the recipient does not use Google Messages app the texts are bounced and automatically re-sent by SMS/MMS.

    Examples...
    Nokia 6021
    and
    iPhones
    and
ANDROID users who have swapped out their Google Messages app for a text app that is purely SMS/MMS (such as QKSMS and probably others).

But that's only my hypothesis, somebody ought to test it and leave feedback for others.

Can't answer that question but from memory (it was a while ago) - if someone sends a text using the Google chat feature AND the recipient uses standard SMS BUT has data turned off then the message is not re-sent via standard SMS.

I suspect having data off means the sending Google Chat app cannot determine if the recipient is using Google Chat or standard SMS and therefore decides to wait.
