Just been awarded higher rate of PIP Inc higher mobility. As I've only recently taxed my car can anyone tell me how to proceed, please. I am told that I can get a rebate on the tax but would I have to SORN the car then apply for new tax using the PIP FORM? Tried ringing DVLA but the wait was endless.Hope someone can help.

First you need to apply for vehicle tax exemption you can do this at your local post office but you'll need your certificate of entitlement, which you should have received with your PIP decision letter. Full details how you do this are all in this link. The vehicle can only be used for the purpose of the disabled person.

Refunds on your current vehicle tax
You’ll automatically get a refund for any full remaining months of vehicle tax when you apply for exemption. The refund will be sent to the address the DVLA have on their records.

I wonder what would happen if someone used their FREE or 50% discounted Vehicle TAX on a car owned by a partner.or spouse, but used for their benefit - then obtained a MOTABILITY car - with inclusive tax - would DVLA realise and cancel the existing car tax ?

You can only use your PIP related car tax exemption on one car so yes you can apply for a tax exemption on your partners card ( I suspect the V5 will need to be in your name however as the registered keeper rather than owner ) as soon as you get your Motability car that automatically becomes your free tax car and your partner needs to tax their car normally.0
