Yes I have sought a solution from the leasing company and they have not provided me with one.

It goes without saying, but having no car for months on end is also a massive inconvenience which, financially I may not be able to quantify, but has caused a lot of stress and frustration.
What solution were you hoping for from the lease company?

Essentially, you have an agreement to pay an amount of money every month and receive the use of a car in return for that over the period of time that the lease agreement was to run.  That can still be fulfilled by the lease company albeit with a later start date and end date.  The agreement is fundamentally unchanged.

Why have you been without a car for "months on end"?
I am quite certain, if you were to pay the lease rate, the lease company would make a suitable alternative vehicle available from their pool of stock cars between when the lease should have started and the correct car being available to allow the proper lease to start.  Lease companies are, after all, in the business of providing cars for use in exchange for a monthly payment.

If you still sought to pursue a claim through Small Claims Court (SCC), you would need to quantify the financial losses - stress and frustration in a case like this is unlikely to be a claimable loss.  Even then, you would need to demonstrate that you had minimised your losses, given the lease company suitable opportunity to provide an alternative resolution and SCC was your last resort.

TBH - while there is some impact because of COVID and the chip shortage - there may be some extent to which COVID is being used as an excuse for the failings of the motor industry and J-I-T manufacturing.

In January 2020 (i.e. before COVID) I was considering a new car and the first Dealer I called said the earliest they could even get a car for test drive would be September.  I then tried a different Dealer from a different manufacturer, who said earliest test drive August.

Even way back in 2017, my BiL ordered a Superb quoted at 6-month lead time and it took 9.  Definitely not because of COVID then.

  • Cars were freely available at the start of the year, that changed very very quickly.

The chip shortage started early in the lockdown 2020. I assumed cars were hard to come by some time shortly after

Well the  pre-reg Skoda I bought last year and taking autrotrader prices as a guide suggest it is worth £3-£4k more today.

OK supply was probably already slowing up up but demand hadn't gone totally crazy in early January.

Skoda at that time were offering 22-23% off MRP on new cars.
  • When I was at a Toyota dealership last week, there was over half of empty spaces. Usually these places are choca full with loads of cars also parked on the road.
    Very strange to see.

Interesting as I'm looking for something 2nd hand at the moment - trade-in values seem to have fallen through the floor over the past 8-10 weeks whereas dealers are still looking for inflated retail prices given what they paid for the stock they have e.g. looking at replacing mine with an identical but facelifted car - mine's a 65 plate with 63k and (potential) replacement is 17 plate with 43k - WBAC have only a £1.5k difference on price between the two yet this translates to an asking price difference of £11.5k. I happen to know that they bought the car in October at £6k more than current WBAC price

I've tried a couple of other dealer groups and seems to be a similar situation
