Over the last 10 years or so I've made use of autoaid 3 times, and the roadside service has been good each time. I do however live and work near the garage that provides the cover in my area and the garage is well run. I've gone to AA this year (via a cashback site) as Autoaid will not cover my vehicle anymore as it is over 15 years old,

    Are you sure about that?
were you reading the general policy?

as an exiting customer I got

    Included Vehicles
Eligible vehicles regardless of age of vehicle.

That may or may not have been the issue in my case. Having looked back if the policy number doesn't start with RC I think you are fine if it does start with RC then vehicles over 15 years old are not covered unless specifically noted on the schedule.

Policy documents can be found here https://www.autoaidbreakdown.co.uk/about/document-downloads/ the second document for policies starting with RC mentions eligible vehicles on page 24, and defines them on page 34. I may have misunderstood which documents were relevant to me when I was sorting breakdown cover but for a small difference in price I didn't want to find myself coverless when broken down at the roadside.

Time to renew, any recommendations? Never know how good they are until I make a claim which I've rarely done. Have been with Green Flag but they have jacked up my premium again.

Thanks. Read so many reviews about poor service that the promo's don't tell me about I was looking for real experience.
An isolated incident of poor service wont give you a clear picture anyway.  A lot (most of?) the big players rely upon local garages to go sort you out, and callout time will depend on how busy they are / how close you are.

Personally, i dont like AutoAid as it seems a faff to have to claim back.

I did use AA but they just sent out some local pickup truck, and i got an identical experience the following year with StartRescue for a fraction of the price.

The MSE guide is a very good read, relative to helping you think about what you actually need and whats important.

You don't have to faff to claim back now from Autoaid, it's just the same as most other breakdown service.
  • I was with RAC for years. But they just got too expensive & I had never called them out. My renewal was £120 knocked down to £109 after a haggle. In the end went to cover my breakdown for £50 personal cover which covers me for being in someone elses car. Have not called them out so cannot say about thier service.
  • Start Rescue. Had battery issues with the car yesterday in a supermarket car park. ETA was one hour but a local contractor turned up well before that. The contractor was polite, helpful and friendly. Got the car started, checked it over and said the battery was toast. He didn't have a battery on him, unfortunately. Drove the car straight home and borrowed a family member's car until I can pick up a new battery. Impressed considering it was Christmas Eve.

Thats why i use them too.  Prior to them i used the AA and when my car did breakdown the AA sent out a local contractor anyway.  I pay probably half as much with StartRescue but it'll be the same local contractor come out anyway.
