Paint smells like 'wet dog'

We have a double length garage which was very dark so painted that with leftover white paint before we moved in. No problem with bad smells. Ours were 60 year old bricks.

I had this a year or so ago when I painted my bathroom with some emulsion paint that had been stored outside. No bad smells as I was painting but shortly after finishing it really started to stink. When it hadn't gone away after a day with the windows open, I just painted over it with 2 fresh coats from a new tin and the smell went away and hasn't come back since.
