I have a large wooden dining table with metal legs & I would like a more modern look. I was thinking of getting a custom cap made to fit over the top of the wood to hide that and create a different, more modern look. Can anyone suggest a company who could do something like this?

I have seen a solid wooden table that had been rubbed down, bits filled and then sprayed with car paint. Looked really good but I don't know how it faired with family use.
There are companies but I think they will be very expensive!

Do you think so? The table was quite expensive and is less than a year old so I was hoping to find a way around getting a new one0

Let's see the table?Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

There may be more options if you have a glass table topper made and then your design printed on heavy duty paper to place underneath.
Easier to change the paper for different designs if you get bored.2 -

Taken a few months, but I got it!Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

Some great suggestions there, although as Doozer said, it would be helpful to see the table in question 😃
I particularly like the idea of getting a heavy glass topper made and placing a paper design of your choice underneath. You could make it a real stand out piece 😉 This is very similar to the way we created a kitchen backsplash of exactly the design we wanted - tempered glass cut to size with one of our favourite Art Nouveau style wallpapers beneath....
Otoh, I'm also a huge fan of eBay - at one point a few years back it was virtually the only place I shopped for the vintage/antique items with which we filled our home - and agree you could sell your current table there and replace with something more suitable.
We bought a £2k John Lewis Gable taupe velvet sofa on eBay for £300 in 2013. Recently we decided to replace it with a colour better suited to our newly finished kitchen and resold it for only very slightly less. Our *new* kitchen sofa (M&S Dante in teal velvet) cost £500 - originally £2k - was also found on eBay, in as new condition 😁
Like Doozer, I have loads of alerts set up for specific items I'm hunting for 😉Mortgage-free for fourteen years!

I have a beautiful mid century teak table that opens up to seat about 14, but most of the time it's closed down and seats 6 and I have an oil cloth on it to protect the lovely wood.
I have the same predicament as the OP in that I'd love to ditch the oil cloth for every day living and have a bright lacquered top like this:
Can't find anybody to do it for me though - I thought it could be made of thin mdf or something and then painted. For my table (2m long) I think toughened glass would be too heavy to move when I need to extend the table.
Any ideas on how to achieve the above gratefully received.0 -
Toughened glass doesn't have to be very thick and heavy. 3-4mm thick is enough for a table top.
The yellow top may be nothing more than acrylic sheet. Plenty of suppliers on line that will provide it cut to your size,2
