Merry Christmas from myself, and my 'borrowed' hound Hugo.
He's one of the two more established residents at the ex-racer rehoming kennels I volunteer at.Hugo didn't seem to be too impressed at being dressed as an Elf yesterday (although he did enjoy the extra treats he got after our walk), and was no more impressed today when we reversed roles (I was an Elf and he became Santa Paws).
The early Christmas present for the kennels (officially announced a couple of weeks ago), was that they're the organisiation being sponsored by the charity arm of Burns Pet Nutrition for 2023, which means Burns will provide all the dog food for a year. What an amazing thing (and relief) during the current financial mess, as fund raising for all charities is getting more and more difficult. The kennels started up just over 9 years ago (with one hound and a slip lead), and have now rehomed over 600 dogs. They currently have space for 16 (might be 18? there's often a couple out on trials which means empty kennel spaces), and all the hounds are walked every day by volunteers.Cheryl28 -
@DawnWUnfortunately I can't offer a permanent home to one - if I could have, then there was one called Jack that I'd have had like a shot (and my OH loved him as much as I did). After one failed attempt they managed to find him his permanent home though, so I'm happy for him. He was another black male - as is Ty, the other long-term resident currently at the kennels. They're the ones that hand around longest for some reasonThe other colours all disappear, then the black females. But no-one seems to want a black male.
I'm out of the house too many hours every day to be able to have any kind of dog of my own. The only way to do so would be to pay for someone to come in part way through the day, and that's way out of my budget.
I'm not sure that one of these hounds would be the right match for me anyway. I do a LOT of walking in my time off work, but I also do some running. I'm a slow plodder who can do up to the marathon distance once in a while. If a hound feels like speeding up they're much more inclined to fancy a short sprint as per their racing days - and sprint is a speed I can't do. I do sometime trot one down a hill slowly - and in fact (probably due to the weather) it was Hugo who instigated the increase in pace on the downhills today much to the amusement of passers by.
My son and his partner have two ex-racers - one male, one female. And both black. Not from this kennel though, as they live nearer to London than Manchester.

We have a whole shallow dish of baked stuffing left over from Christmas Day.Any unusual ideas for using it up please? Would hate to waste it.
Was wondering if it could be cut into tiny cubes, rebaked and used for soup croutons?7 -
Cut into squares, freeze.

Re the leftover stuffing, I find it tasty on a sandwich. Instead of using butter/margarine, spread with cranberry sauce/redcurrant jelly, top with cold meat (chicken/turkey/gammon), then crumble stuffing over before you put the top slice on. Yum!
Something else I had many years ago, was a pie that contained turkey/chicken, cranberry sauce, stuffing & gravy. DeliciousUse it up, wear it out
Make do or do without!
If you see someone without a smile, give them one of yours 😃

Lovely picture, Cheryl. Took me back. We adopted a greyhound from there, many years ago, "Stumpy". He died about 10 years ago. We now have a working collie instead. Lovely dogs, greyhounds, great with children.
Hope everyone had a great Christmas, hugs, mumtoomany.xxxFrugal Living Challenge 2025.8
