Look in places like B and M and think age uk sell wool - often find it in poundstretcher - places that you don‘t really think you would get wool
Have fun - I like crochet

B&M and Poundland were handy when I was teaching myself to crochet. Charity shops (especially the smaller local ones) are handy for odd balls of yarn and it’s worth trying your local freebie/reuse pages on FB and the like.✒️ Declutter 2025👗 Fashion on the Ration 2025 61/66 coupons (5 coupons silver boots)✒️Declutter 2024 🏅🏅🏅(DSis 🏅🏅)

CW18 some of our charity shops here have a selection of wool; odds and ends to practice on. The local Hospice shop also has new balls of yarn.
Other than that, try your local market plus Hobbycraft have a good stock once you've sorted out what you want.
If you have an active FB page then you could try asking on there for spare wool to learn crochet. I once got 2 black bags of wool from a lady who couldn't manage to knit any more.4 -
Aldi sometimes have yarns fairly cheaply although I think you need to look at the quality! Really not worth buying very cheap stuff if the quality isn't decent - you'll find it difficult to crochet with as the yarn will split very easily. I'm currently making reusable face cloths and bought some cheap crochet cotton in poundstretchers but have found the yarn splits really easily and it's also quite hard now it's made, hopefully it'll soften up when washed.
I also bought some decent cotton in HobbyCraft, yes much more expensive, same price for 25g as I paid for 100g in pound stretchers but the quality is much better and much easier to work with and is seems to be softer than the cheap stuff (I've only just started on this better quality cotton so hard to tell yet - only crocheted 2 rows so far). I can only do a small amount at a time due to arthritis in the base of my thumb which starts hurting really quickly once I start crocheting unfortunately.
I had to teach myself to crochet as my mum only knitted so I watched some UTube videos. The one I found most useful for Bella Coco so might be worth having a look.

I don't crochet , but am a prolific knitter and have been for well over 70 plus years I knit every day and knit blankets for The Linus Trust for children all over the world who often have nothing but the clothes they stand up in.
A lot of my wool is from donations, and as long as the colours are bright they get made into blankets.even small amounts of ends of balls are used to make stripey ones.
In the summer if I see a boot fair I will have a look around and often pick up of knitted stuff for very little cost which I take home unpick, wash the wool rewind and reknit. Recycling at its best
( useful for white wool as often baby cardis are either in white, lemon, pink, blue or light green.
But ask around any friends who may have Grannies or older relations who perhaps have given up knitting as often you get lots of donations from them.
I had two huge bags given to me last year from a lady who was moving and was decluttering her house. Local library knitting groups will often help with odds and ends of balls to practice on. My local facebook or community page sometime have wool offered .
Every little helps as is said

PS if you live anywhere in the Medway area of Kent give me a PM as I could probably help as well7 -
I always found Aldi yarn to be reasonable quality. Sue Ryder charity shops usually sell new yarn.
If you have time to join a group check out your local library or FB page to see if there is a craft group. We have two locally. I go to the one in the library and we are always willing to help novices. We have yarn too as people keep giving it to us.5 -
Aldi wool is reasonable quality. Try deramores online. Some patterns especially american ones wil have translation to the weight of yarn that is suitable as a substitute. You dont want to biy expensive yarn whilst you are practicing.craft stash 2023 =161, 2024 = 119 2025 = £25.96 spent, 128 made and 5 mended,
