car hire (Goldcar)

Although I am a regular car hirer, I still got caught out with fuel charges.i have recently realised that the FULL/FULL contract is best for everyone, as you pick up the car FULL and you the hirer drop it back FULL , so you only pay for what you use...Simple???? you would have though so!!..BUT NO when I dropped of my Golf back to GOLDCAR Tenerife South Airport Full , a day later I checked my credit card statement only to find they had charged me 117.20 euros for, you guessed it, fuel !!!!.
when I questioned this with them they said I dropped the car off with only 1;8 of a tank.i had the car for 4 days , I did some local running about and 1 trip up North to Puerto de la Cruz, in total I guess I did 250kms which would tally with the 30 euros I put in the car at the airport before I dropped it back.i unfortunately paid for the fuel in cash ,so don't have proof on a bank statement of this transaction, and didn't keep the receipt for the fuel which they are now requiring as proof.
as warning to you all 1.take a FULL/FULL contract and 2. Keep receipts as you may have to prove you filled the car
This seems to be a regular scam among car hire firms so watch out and let your friends know
thanks for reading

I'm sure your post will help someone but, although I rarely if ever hire cars abroad, I was aware that Goldcar have one of the worst reputations.

Goldcar be Goldcarin'. It's their entire business model.
  • Too late now but always take a picture of the fuel gauge & mileage.
    It's a well documented car hire ' scam '.

I think that Goldcar operate on a franchise basis so experiences in one country might be totally different to those in another. I've hired from them twice at Faro, Portugal and no problem in fact last time in October they were excellent having checked the car over as soon as I returned it. They'd emailed me confirmation that all was as it should be and deposits would be refunded in full before I'd walked to the terminal.

Sorry I can't think of anything profound, clever or witty to write here.
