Passport expiry dates need to be 1 year left not 6 months

Hi , If you are planning on flying please make sure your passport has over a year left on it not the usual standard 6 months we are all used to. I went to check in last Friday at Manchester airport and easyJet told me I could not fly due to my passport not having above a year left until it expires , my expiry is Nov 2022. I was told it is a new rule due to Brexit and if they allowed me on the plane they would be fined. I just wanted to warn others so you can avoid the upset and disappointment that I experienced.

    Where were you travelling to?
    Gov.uk says differently for Europe.

     https://www.gov.uk/guidance/passport-rules-for-travel-to-europe

Edited to add, it appears to depend on when your passport was issued.

“To make things more complicated, if you renewed your current passport before the previous one expired, any remaining validity (up to nine months) would likely have been added to its expiry date over the usual limit of 10 years. However, any extra months on your passport may not count towards the six months required. This is because Schengen Area countries also require passports to have been issued within the last 10 years on the day of travel.  This means that you could have up to 15 months left on your passport and you’d still be refused entry to Schengen Area countries. “

It depends on when your passport was issued. You take 10 years from that date.

If you had extra , unused months added these are no longer valid.

Not new due to Brexit, just more of an issue than it used to be as most trips are to the EU and post Brexit our rights to enter the EU have reverted to those of a friendly external party.

It has always been international standard that passports are a maximum of 10 years duration and the UK's allowing you to early renew and carry forward the extra is an oddity. In many countries you will need you passport to be 9.5 years old or less but the exact requirements do vary by country.

There is something amiss here based on the information provided.

Maybe if the OP can tell us a) the issue date of her passport, b) the expiry date, and c), where she was flying to, we can help her further.

"You need a year left on your passport" is in some cases inaccurate, as already stated. It also isnt a Brexit rule, it was merely bringing UK passports in line with the rest of the world.

From the Gov site entry to Cyprus, always worth a check.

    Passport validity

Check your passport is valid for travel before you book your trip, and renew your passport if you do not have enough time left on it.

    Make sure your passport is:

    • valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave Cyprus
    • less than 10 years old

The 3 months you need when leaving a country must be within 10 years of the passport issue date.

If you renewed your current passport before the previous one expired, extra months may have been added to its expiry date. Any extra months on your passport over 10 years may not count towards the minimum 3 months needed.

If you’re travelling to the north of Cyprus, their administration advises that your passport should be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry to the north.
