I understood what they were saying ... I was just highlighting that their suggestion of 24 hours would make things worse (for everyone). The OP was already bemoaning having only 36+ hours (or whatever); I'm sure they'd love that to be only 24 hours. ;)

Are all the toll booths on the Tyne Tunnel pre pay ? i know when the second new tunnel was built the toll booths were payment or tunnel pass ( i was working on and off on the new tunnel from the start and one of he first to cross it ,even if it was by foot )
I cannot imagine that all transport using the two tunnels have pre paid.
I paid cash back in the summer but it looks like that options been removed.
We were watching the tv last night and an advert came on for the Tyne Tunnel explaining that the pay booths have now been replaced by pre pay or pay on line after ,we have never seen this advert before ,we live in the North East of England.
  • As long as you pay the Tyne Tunnel charge as soon as you remember to, and before TT2 issue their “Unpaid Troll Charge Notice”, then TT2 has no legal power to demand extra money from you, even if you have paid after their deadline.  TT2 has imitated the London Congestion Charge in charging what are in effect penalty fares.  But in TT2’s case it does not actually have the legal authority to do so.  The legal power that TT2 does have is as follows “ Where tolls … remain unpaid after they have become due … the person to whom they are payable may recover from the person liable to pay them the amount of the tolls together with all other reasonable costs and expenses.” If you read this carefully it is clear that as long as you pay the charge before TT2 go to the cost and expense of issuing their letter, then you do not owe them anything more.  TT2, of course, will not admit this and will harass you with a series of increasingly threatening and extortionate demands.  But these have no legal basis.

The payment window is tight because the longer you leave it the more chance you forget which would end up with more people getting fined.

...before TT2 issue their “Unpaid Troll Charge Notice”...
OP was unhappy with the tone of some of the responses but that seems harsh ;)

The Dartmouth Crossing will waive the penalty the first time someone forgets to pay. Do the Tyne Tunnels do the same or are they greedy?
Have they built a bridge to Kingswear....?

Whatever the time allowed and the fine imposed I think it should be doubled for playing the "Won't anyone think of the children" card. As already said it is a 2 minute job to do it sometime in the next 24+ hours and presumably said infant was sleeping for at least some of that time.

As with everything , no matter when the deadline is there will be somebody who misses it and considers they have a good reason for doing so.

A decision to put off paying is a costly  mistake.
