I want to improve privacy and reduce dust from the road outside my house. There is a small garden and wall. The wall is 1m high, except for the corner where it turns 90 degrees (we live on a corner) where there is a pillar up to about 1.6m.
I understand you can have an evergreen hedge to to 2m, is that right?
Just wondering if there is anything that is less maintenance or taller we could install?

Whereas you can normally, given the fact you live on a corner may bring in additional regulations that allow road users to see around the the corner.
im sure someone will be along soon to elaborate30th June 2021 completely debt free…. Downsized, reduced working hours and living the dream.1 -
I don't think a high wall around block anyone's view as they turned in. The main problem there is people parking on the yellow lines.0

A wall or fence over 1m next to the road would need planning permission - do your neighbours have such high walls? That would be an indication it might be accepted.
But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,Had the whole of their cash in his care.

A wall or fence normally needs planning permission, hedges don't. I don't even think that the 2m limit would apply if you're not depriving a neighbour of light.
For the hedge, you can either have privacy soon (laurel, lleylandii, bay) but have more ongoing maintenance, or be patient and have lower maintenance (e.g. yew). Green fingered forum section will have more ideas if you go that way...1 -

Part of our wall, the bit well away from the main road but next to the side road, is about 1.7m. It could do with being a bit taller really, maybe another 20cm.0 -

Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.1 -

If you say you only want another 20cm, how about screwing some trellis to the wall and growing something like clematis or roses along it? Might not strictly be legal, but there's a good chance you'll get away with it.

Clumping varieties of bamboo are quite nice. Fairly fast growing (although not as fast as the runner types) and can simply be cut at the height you need them to be and they won't grow any more.
The roots are shallow and they're easy to maintain.
Just get different varieties just in case they flower.1
