MOT due on Wednesday 15 Dec - driver side mirror casing knocked off & broken

Some careless motorist has knocked my driver side wing mirror and the back casing is missing. Although the mirror is undamaged and the manual adjustment still works there is a piece of the frame surrounding the mirror broken off and the inner workings are visible from the back. Will this cause the car to fail the MOT.

The car is a Toyota Yaris 5 door Hatch
Year of manufacture  2010
Cylinder capacity 1329 cc

I want to buy either the back cover of the mirror or the whole wing mirror unit but don't think I will be able to buy it in time for Wednesday.  Any ideas where I can find either the back cover or the whole unit quickly and for a reasonable price.

presumably you have your MOT booked so why not ring them up to ask?  they may even be able to help find the parts required.

    Scrap yard?
why can you not get it online quickly?

i don’t think it will fail, but I’d be concerned about rain And moisture so as a minimum I’d wrap it in plastic/tape whilst you aren’t driving the car.

In future I’d recommend booking your mot before its due. You won’t lose any time but it avoids this unnecessary time pressure.

Try the local Toyota dealer. I've had to replace these a couple of times (though not on Toyotas) and the dealer prices haven't been excessive.

I'm looking online now and see there are a few electric units but no manual ones.
Am I correct in calling it a manual mirror if it's adjustable from this switch (link below) to the right of the steering wheel.

The wing mirror is closed by pushing them in to the car, they do not fold in electrically.

Thanks for the tip. I will put a plastic bag around it.
The MOT expires on the 18th. I have become lazy about the MOT as I have never had a failure. I get it done by a local garage and they are very busy at this time so I am unlikely to get a later date.
As I only discovered it this afternoon I have not had time to do much. Googling breakers yards just results in lots of sites wanting to scrap my car.  I can't afford to pay too much for the mirror unit.

Can you shed light on if it's a manual or an electric. See post with link to control switch. I thought it was manual but almost all the units on sale are electric.

They are closed until Monday. I hope by then to have ordered the cover or the complete unit and have it delivered so they can fit. I can;t afford dealer prices.

Any mechanical engineers or DIY car fixers know the answer????

That will be electric not manual.
As long as the mirror itself is intact and there are no sharp protrusions it should not fail the mot. You can always cover the back with gaffa tape to tidy it up and ensure no sharp edges for the mot

    That looks electric to me.
A manual mirror has a handle inside the car to physically move the mirror.
If you are pressing a switch and it moves then it must be electric (and therefore needs to be kept dry).

Is this the sort of thing you want?

Make sure you put the reg in to get the right one but it Seems possible to get it next day delivery.

my 1998 Corsa has a handle inside the car which physically moves the mirror.

I think you are saying there is a switch (like below) in the door that adjusts the mirror position in the housing:

So that is an electrically adjustable wing mirror.

However, if you have to fold the mirrors in manually, then they are not "power-fold" (or whichever terminology Toyota coin for that feature).

    I hope that helps.
