Car failed MOT and they told me the retest fee will be £22.50. I've read that the max for a retest fee is half the original MOT fee which in my case was £35. So should I only be paying £17.50? Can't find anything on this on kwikfit site or gov.uk. I also wondered can I take it for a retest to a different garage?

  • You can only take for a retest to the original testing station otherwise it wouldn’t be a retest.

The £35 fee is discounted. The £22.50 retest fee isn’t discounted. As long as it’s lass than half of the maximum prescribed £54 something, it’s fine.
  • First mistake was going there in the first place.
Do you not have a no pass no fee Mot site near you ?.

My mate used Kwikfit for the £17.50 mot, it failed.
He drove 1 mile down the road and 20 mins later to a No pass no fee test site.
    Passed first time.
Got refund from Kwikfit, as pass made them look very dodgy.
Kwikfit wanted 2 tyres and head light adjustments @ £165.00.

Just search No pass no fee mot. Add your town.

I went to Mot Centres in Depford, Catford, Forest Hill, Penge and Croydon. In the past.

Give a rough location and I will look for sites near you.

Used these guys for 4 year in a row, one year headlight beam was out and he just adjusted it and passed car.
I gave him a fiver to say thanks. After it pass that is.

Is this the same as council mot? Mot only? No repair?

Some don’t do repairs. Some do.
Those that don’t offer repairs are best as no incentive to fail your car.

How do they make money if my car fail and I take it away for repair, and they don't charge for the test fee???

This sounds like an awful idea.  A place that only takes payment if the car passes is surely a place that passes the car regardless of problems...
  • I thought the norm was no fee for retest after a fail

Depends on the circumstances - full details can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/getting-an-mot/retests
Basically, if you leave the car at the garage after a fail, and they repair it and do a partial retest, there's no further fee to pay.  I guess this is the usual scenario when you've taken it to a garage you trust and it's only relatively minor stuff that needs fixing.  And of course, any garage is free to charge less than the legal maximum price for any test (e.g. charging £35 for a standard test), if they choose - they just can't charge more.
