I love the holier than though patronising comments on here lol. Don't fall off that high horse.
I have the same situation. I swapped over to SKY expecting the two parties to liaise, as with broadband, utilities etc.
As it turns out they didn't, and I should have cancelled my BT contract as stated in the small print half way down page 4 in the document. Which unbelievably i missed.
Having noticed only recently when my BT broadband contract ended (no I didn't check mid contract either), I contacted BT only to be told it was my problem.
Reality is, irrespective of my oversight 18 months ago, BT have received two payments for my BT sports package, both directly from me, and again from me via my SKY account.
As such, having been made aware, and with billing evidence, BT should be refunding the additional payments. I have declined one small refund offer, and will follow up with the Ombudsman and small claims if necessary.

How would Sky know that you had BT Sport via BT, and how would BT know that you had it via Sky? They are two completely separate services, which can co-exist, so you have been receiving service over both mediums. Its nothing like broadband where the same infrastructure is re-used.1

When I tried to add BT Sport to my Sky package - via the remote control on my tv - the screen clearly stated "you will need to cancel your BT package if you have one, in order to avoid paying twice". There was even an option to defer the activation of the BT Sport on Sky to allow time to cancel BT Sport.
To be fair, it was made quite clear that I would need to contact BT separately to cancel to avoid being double charged. Appreciate this might not be everyone's experience however

BT have done similar with me but the other way round. I was getting BT Sport on the Sky TV platform. BT persuaded me to move Broadband & TV, including BT Sport, to the BT TV platform. They said they’d organise the transfer, which they did, except for leaving BT Sport on the Sky TV platform. The whole reason for the transfer! After 4 years I got an email for the bill, at which point I noticed I’d been paying for 4 years! At the same time I started getting 2 emails, rather than 1, 2s apart, for the BT TV platform; maybe suggesting an email server fix? They did not refund me for a service I couldn’t receive & the Ombudsman sided with them??!?! So it looks like standard policy for BT to rip off its customers in this manner0
