We first issued our polymer £20 note on 20 February 2020. It features the artist JMW Turner. 30 September 2022 is the last day you can use our paper £20 and £50 notes.

took some really old twenties and old one pound notes and nat west paid them into my account. I could have had the cash no problems. took minutes
  • I was trying to spend a paper £20 a few weeks ago in a shop and the woman was adamant that they had stopped accepting them and wouldn't take it at first. After I insisted, she then proceeded to look it up in an attempt to prove me wrong ,on facebook of all places, as she told me that where originally found out that they had stopped taking them. it was taking a long time and I said why don't you just google it, and she did and then finally accepted the old £20!
and to answer the question, 30th Sept 2022 is when shops will stop accepting them. after that you need to take them to a bank
Shops have never been required to accept currency of any amount or of any particular denomination.

I'd have told you we stopped accepting paper £20 notes two seconds before I served you, then refused to serve you.
