Howdy!
I have a strange annoying problem regarding the above .
Not sure if it’s a remote control issue , or if the sensors of my Toshiba TV and remote control are the issue.

Things get complicated to explain , but I’ll give it a go ..
As you can see I have 4 controls for everything that needs to be used.
As I don’t watch tv in the morning , I have set up the silver onkyo remote( which is just for my stereo amp) to work as a remote for my Apple TV Box. When I turn my TV on , it is done via the onkyo remote or the AppleTV Remote. This goes straight to my hdmi input 2 which is for Apple TV box only .

If I want to watch Freesat TV then I adjust the Toshiba Remote to HDMI 1 and then use the Humax Remote to control my TV Programmes etc

Now to the crux of the issue I have;
when I want to turn off power on TV, nothing happens ! That is until I wipe tv clean with cloth ( which doesn’t always work ) , or keep pressing the Toshiba and Onkyo remotes .

Maybe I need a “one for all remote “
There are many, and cost varies as do reviews.

Would this be the way to go??

One other thing; the TV doesn’t have an on/ off switch you can just press like in the real olden days .Everything is done on remote.
I have changed batteries and wiped clean Toshiba remote but reluctant to open it up .
Thanks for looking , and appreciate any advice given

I can't help you with the remotes but I can suggest a crude solution.

How accessible is the TV power socket? You could use that to switch off the TV.

If it is awkward to easily access, and they usually are hidden away at near floor level behind the TV,  then you could fit an inline switch to the TV power cable near where it enters the TV. where it is easily accessible.

Alternatively you could fit a remote controlled socket for the TV but that will be more expensive and more effort to install.

PS: You could open up the TV remote control and clean the insides. That is usually easy to do and often solves the type of problem you are having.
A man walked into a car showroom.
He said to the salesman, “My wife would like to talk to you about the Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
Salesman said, “We haven't got a Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
The man replied, “You have now mate".
  • Thanks @Belenus
I have switched off power from the wall a couple of times . It would be too much of a pain to disconnect power socket as TV is wall mounted .
That remote controlled socket sounds interesting though ..

    🤦🤦🤦🤦😼😬
I think the above should explain that I have just found ..the power switch on my Tv after all😬
Well, in my defence .. it is actually a TV/DVD combi. That row of buttons is on the side of the unit .Plus of course , having such a device for 10+years it is easy to be complacent.

Then again , there is still the question; is it worth getting a “one for all” remote to make things more straightforward and fiddly ?

Well done on finding the power switch.   :D

I don't like all in one remote controls. They are usually fiddly to use and are never as easy and intuitive to operate as a dedicated control.

I have a plethora of different controls. I usually keep the TV and Sky+ remotes on the coffee table as they are the most frequently used.

The other controls I keep on a tray out of sight under the coffee table which has a low level shelf with a few inches gap underneath. I just have to slide my fingers under that shelf, pull the tray out and select the remote that I need.

    TV
    Sky+

    Audio Amplifier
    DVD/Blu Ray player
Vortex Box (Audio Files ripped from CDs in FLAC format - like mp3 but less compressed and retain original quality)
    Media Player (Music Videos)
Second DVD/Blu Ray player that is normally in another room.

  • Thanks again @Belenus 😼👍
Thought I’d show my setup while topic is hot! ( ignore the exciter album sleeve . I was getting a bit nostalgic with dodgy metal bands of the ‘80’s😹)
That vortex box may be of interest . Any ideas of cost and compatibility?

What I may try and do later, I’d see if the humax box can be controlled by onkyo remote instead . Any pointers there would be helpful ..,

I don't really know the current cost of a VortexBox as mine is about ten years old. I think I paid about £200 for it on eBay. You can make one yourself as it is basically a PC adapted to play FLAC audio files. Google for more details.

What make of Strat is that?

I have a few Squiers, one in tobacco sunburst a bit like yours.

I am nowhere near good enough to justify owning a real Fender Strat.

Thanks for that . I'll investigate . Tbh, all sound is good except iTunes files could be better.
You tube sounds good believe it or not .

The strat ? £55 copy off eBay . It's really gathering dust as I'm a bass player and tried to see if I could play a little bit of guitar for bass recordings . Unfortunately  am terrible
I use synths now instead 😸. Keep playing ..😼🤙

There arent many good options out there any more since Logitec stated its discontinuing their Harmony solution (though claim will continue supporting the software - we'll see how long)

The Harmony we have is great, the brains sits in a cupboard and has two IR blasters and so all the electronics are out of sight (wife friendly). The thing can be controlled by its remote (preferred for us) which uses radio rather than IR so doesnt need line of sight or can be controlled via the internet on a smartphone etc.

It works on the basis of "themes" and you make these up based on your needs and preferences so for us we have a "watch AppleTV TV Night" which turns on the tv, amp, appletv, the bias lighting behind the TV and the two floor lamps (all set to 30% output), selects the appletv input on the amp and hdmi2 on the TV. Decide to watch on the big screen instead and so press "watch AppleTV Projector" and it'll then turn off the TV and all the lights in the room, turn on the projector, drop down the screen and close the curtains.

We used to have it as a remote only which was ok but only worked with IR devices, needed line of sight and given some sequences can be long you needed to ensure you had the remote pointing in the right direction for a while else if you drop it on the sofa the IR may be blocked and you find everything turns on but inputs werent right. At that point the remote gets a bit more fiddly to correct the issue but really no more than having to get the 5 different physical remotes.

    Thanks @Sandtree
I know about the harmony / Logitec . I know they were around for quite some time .
I saw various remotes over the years in comet and other places I forgot now .
Also saw some of those £10 jobbies that were in sale in Robert Dyas etc . Some of those looked more chad valley / fisher price tbh and not really tech standard 😺. Could be wrong though

It does look like I'll have to live with my current set up I guess. Not a major thing to moan about in the scheme of things , and at least everything is still working 🤞

Looking at the humax possibilities of using a different remote , I found out that I cannot do what I wanted . Plus it seems Humax are not making set top boxes anymore .
