Driest Way to Clean a Carpet

I am looking for the driest way to clean a carpet or have a carpet cleaned.

I hope this makes sense but I want to get the carpet cleaned at the house I'm buying.

But I can't be there all day or keep the windows open overnight to help it dry out.

I also don't want to leave the carpets damp with no ventilation and the one company I have spoken to have said they won't be soaking but they'll take a day to dry.

Is there a way to do this that will be drier or am I wanting something that doesn't exist  :D

  • Rug Doctor is a good DIY kit or you could get someone in.  You won't need to stay there all day and certainly won't need to keep the windows open.  If you really want to speed things up you could hire a dehumidifier and run then when the carpet cleaner has gone.

Carpet cleaners work a bit like a "wet and dry" vacume and suck up most of the water when they're done.  The carpets won't be that wet after they're done.  You won't need to leave the windows open all day for it to dry - maybe just for an hour or so when it's done, and another hour the next day.

Fans are the key to drying carpets that have been cleaned by hot water extraction, desk fans pedestal fans are ideal.p osition them to either blow across the floor or at the floor not up in the air.
Think of how washing dries best & a windy day wins hands down.
Keep the windows slightly openend on the night latches & the heating on low & you'll have no need to stay in.

It is more a case of you wanting something that you don't really need.

Whether you use a hired Rug Doctor type machine, your own Vax or Bissel machine or get a company in, the carpets will dry reasonably quickly. The more you can air the house and the more it is heated the quicker that will be.

Are you referring to one carpet or the whole house?

How soon after the cleaning will you want to move furniture in?

A man walked into a car showroom.
He said to the salesman, “My wife would like to talk to you about the Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
Salesman said, “We haven't got a Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
The man replied, “You have now mate".

You'd be suprised at the difference in drying times depending on carpet / backing  type  /  machine/ tools used & how heavily soiled it is.
This time of year is not the best but needs must.

Plastic footed furniture is ok on a slightly damp carpet but avoid anyhing that prevents air movement , careful with wooden furniture as often these are stained up & can leech when on damp carpet unless you place aluminium foil or clingfilm etc underneath. Same applies to metal as wood due to possible rust /oxide marks
  • A Polti steam cleaner doesn't leave the carpets as wet a carpet cleaners but is really only suitable for lightly soiled carpets rather than ones with deep or large stains

Thank you all. I've never had a carpet cleaned before so I'm a bit clueless.

It's a mix of upstairs, downstairs and hallway.

Unfortunately, the windows are all either open or closed type as they don't have latches, vents or small windows.

They look clean but I want to make sure they are. They aren't stained or anything. More of a freshen up.

I could do them in the morning and crank the heating on with windows cracked.

I wouldn't need furniture on them for a day or two.

I've been pointed to a 2nd hand store we have locally that have carpet cleaners so I'm going to take a look on Monday.

A friend got one for the cost of renting a machine so it seems a good option.

If they look clean and you just want to freshen up you could just sprinkle with bicarbonate of soda, leave overnight, then vacuum well.  Works wonders for neutralising smells - even things like dog or strong perfume.  No moisture so no need to worry about damp.
