Is your landline phone connected to the back of your router?

If you have old phones, do they ring correctly?

I think if you are vunrable you can have a phone line that works during a power cut. How does that work? Batteries or do they use the old 2 wire connection to your house?

I can't speak for Virgin specifically, but usually this sort of thing has the option of batteries in the router (or attached to it) to provide emergency phone service.

No landline phone comes out of dedicated virgin connection on the wall. So in my case I have both a BT and Virgin connection in my house, both separate points into house.

    Thank you.

I wonder if that is still the case when backup line is selected

So the phone line comes out the router these days. (2 wire), as I feared.

The emergency line is another box (which sits inbetween) (BBU) with a battery inside it and SIM.  It can only make emergency outgoing calls.
The only good thing about is that it generates the ring signal on pin 3, even when off.
