    When I bought a new build I dearly wished I'd had a professional "snagger" to go round the empty house on day 1. I was finding things for the next year and vowed never to buy new again as getting Barratts to fix them was like herding smoke.

    My whole car was filled with the essentials. The lunch. Including gluten free for my mum. The juice to stay hydrated. The bedding. The Allen keys to build the bed. I had my hand bag, and laptop bag for work.

    The car keys however. Not a !!!!!! clue. 🤣🤣  when the removal men said were done let’s go. I had this mad panic and they were wetting their pants.

    to be fair my mother had them at the new house. My partner had a space in his car. (When we stuck a couple of extra bits in the removal van). This was only manageable as I wasn’t moving too far. Pay attention to the things that seem so obvious that they cannot possible go wrong. Seriously who loses their car keys?

    Label and number your boxes and keep an inventory of what is in which box on a spreadsheet - this was a lifesaver for me when I moved last year.  My mum moved in with me just before Christmas and didn't do this, so now we spend all our time in the garage looking in boxes for stuff she can't find (joyous - not!!).
    Also, pack an overnight bag with toothbrush, change of clothes, shower gel, phone charger etc for the whole household so you're not leaping from box to box looking for the Colgate at bedtime.  Like others have said, get the bed/s made up as soon as you can, that's a job no-one wants to be doing at the end of a long day, and a box with basic cutlery, crockery - the kettle! - kitchen towel, tea and coffee etc.
    Happy moving day, hope it all goes well :smile:

    When we moved last year I took our door keys to the EA and picked up our new ones. Loaded the car ready to go to the new house, locked the front door with the spare and dropped it through the letterbox, got in the car looked for the car keys realised I had left the car keys on the kitchen side 🤦🤦🤦 frantic call to the EA who had to bring out the keys I had dropped off half hour before.

    Extra stress on a day that was unbelievably stressful already!!!

  • Do keep your first aid box on you.  First night in my new home dropped something on my toe and I had no idea where it was.

    Make a list of all you need to tell you are moving, ie council, banks, gas/ elect, loyalty cards, BT, vets, doctors, pensions, any clubs you belong to, and professional bodies you belong to / etc etc
    I made a checklist in this forum a few years ago ... back in a minute;
    I think there a a comprehensive list of who to tell / what to think of already. In case, Which? has made a handy check list, and you can even download it https://www.which.co.uk/money/mortgages-and-property/home-movers/moving-house/moving-house-checklist-ap7pv6c6t74x

    Sort out contents insurance asap.
    Might be worth contacting your current provider to ensure it is in place from day 1.
    I would also leave a large, prepaid envelope for your landlord and ask them to forward any mail that escapes the redirection service.
    Or for peace of mind Royal Mail offer forward mail service -- I think it's around £33 for 3 months (and can do for longer obviously)...

    If you didn't know where your toe was, dropping a hammer on it is the least of your problems - LOL! Hope it's OK now, though :)

  • If you're halfway handy with spreadsheets, create one and every time you think of something, add it on.

    Include a list of all your banks, water companies, local council, doctor's surgery, broadband, mobile supplier etc etc. Absolutely anyone to who you pay money or receive a service from so that as soon as your moving date is confirmed, you can start letting them know about your change of address.
