Shiply courier / ebay problem

I could kick myself really.  I have just paid for a very expensive desk on ebay, on the grounds that the courier charge would be less than £100.  The seller accepted my offer and said she would arrange delivery with Shiply.  I am not knowledgeable about transport and couriers.  I got a message saying she had arranged collection and delivery with another courier, (I didn't know that Shiply are sort of "agents" who provide quotes only).  I looked for reviews of this new courier and they were appalling so I messaged her saying I either want to cancel or she would have to get another courier.  She asked for my mobile no. and rang me, saying she would try and find a better courier via Shiply.  I began looking for couriers myself that I could arrange personally.  I now have had a message from Shiply telling me that "Good_fellas" would be doing the delivery.  I am completely unable to find any Good_fellas in the UK.  I am now totally spooked and have asked seller to cancel my order.  This should be fine as the item has not been despatched.
I have got total heeby-jeebies now about the whole thing, because the desk cost £1000!! So why would someone selling a desk like that risk a no insurance bad courier?  I feel I may have been had!  Maybe if the desk did arrive it would not be the one in the picture either!  I will never ever spend that much on ebay again!
Do I have cancellation rights in these circumstances?

Shipley tends to be just a man with a van so you won’t necessarily find much online about the person booked to deliver. As for cancellation , is seller private or a business? If private then seller doesn’t have to accept a cancellation, if a business then a cancellation might be possible although if courier is already booked and paid for you may end up having to accept the desk and they paying yourself to get it returned.

If however the desk is delivered damaged, or not the one you bought then you would need to open a SNAD case and seller would need to,pay to get it returned.

You should do everything (and I mean EVERYTHING) through eBay. Once you have agreed to purchase an item it's up to the seller to get it to you. On their advert it should say exactly what their method of delivery is and how much they charge for it. There is no need whatsoever to get involved in any conversations  or agreements about delivery with any seller - or buyer if you happen to sell something on eBay). It's all been pre-arranged. It isn't the buyer's responsibility or problem. You should never pay any extra for anything.

Go to your eBay page and at the top, left hand side, click on 'help and contact'. Then report everything to eBay.

    See this link -  https://community.ebay.co.uk/t5/Archive-Buyer-Central/How-do-I-raise-a-SNAD/td-p/6061200

SNAD - Significantly Not As Described.

You should be able to get a full refund but in future, if there is one on eBay for you, please remember to do every single thing via eBay. That way your money back guarantee is assured.

Re reading this I think there is a possibility , and perhaps OP can clarify, that this was a collection only item and that’s why the cost of the courier wasn’t clear. If original listing showed a courier cost then OP a can insist on not paying more or having the purchase cancelled. If however this was a collection only item and buyer asked for a courier to be arranged then that transaction would be outside of ebay and would be a separate agreement between buyer and seller.

    Hi,

Shiply transport providers are not allowed to use their company name on the site.  That is why when you searched for "Good_fellas" on Google, no reviews were returned.

Here are their reviews on Shiply itself https://www.shiply.com/transport-provider/Good_fellas.  They have been on Shiply since 2016, conducted 62,343 jobs and have 96.9% positive feedback.

If you are uncomfortable with 96.9% feedback, you could also ask the eBay seller to pick another transport provider for you with an even higher score.  There are many others with 99%-100%.

    I hope this helps.

    Thanks,
    Shiply

  • See, they're Goodfellas and your item doesn't end up in bits 'n Pizzas. :open_mouth:

  • I would go ahead with the purchase - its up to the seller to ensure the item is adequately packaged for transport, bearing in mind the courier is also chosen by the seller. Any extra insurance etc is again the sellers choice.

Should the item arrive to you damaged, you can open a SNAD case and the seller would be liable to cover the cost for the item to be returned and refunded. No monies lost on your part. The seller can then claim on the purchased insurance.

In this case the seller has been good enough to change couriers for you already - he/she did not have to do that. All they have to do is make sure the item gets to you as described.

As above, it all depends on whether seller had a courier delivery as an option or if this is being arranged privately after sale between buyer and seller. If this is a private arrangement between buyer and seller for a collection only item then once seller has proof of collection via the QR code it becomes the resposinility of buyer if item is lost or damaged.
