Using old DVD recorder with digital tech

I have an old analogue DVD recorder. I'm not very tech savvy but I think I need a device that will enable the analogue DVD recorder and anything digital to understand/talk to each other. Would you know what is needed and also will the quality still be there?
I wish to record some things from my Sky box to keep on DVD. These programmes will never be repeated (e.g. my friend on local news) and I am leaving Sky as soon as my contract with them finishes.

  • Could you tell us the make and model of the DVD recorder please? Should be able to connect it to any TV-out source but this will probably be via a scart socket on your recorder.

I've just done this with the aid of a £12 converter box from Amazon.

Took the HDMI out from a Sky Q box into the SCART of a Panasonic HDD/DVD recorder.  Picture quality suffers a little, but as it's primarily for music programmes, the soundtrack is the important thing for me.

    It is a Panasonic DMR-ES10.

Does that device defeat the copy protection that is applied to many programmes on Sky?

If it doesn't leapyear will only be able to copy non copy protected programmes.

Leapyear, what model of Sky box do you have? Does it have a SCART output?

As far as I recall, there is copy protection of the HDMI HD output but not on the SCART SD output.
A man walked into a car showroom.
He said to the salesman, “My wife would like to talk to you about the Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
Salesman said, “We haven't got a Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
The man replied, “You have now mate".

I have no idea.  Everything I did was on Sky Arts, I had no problems.

Do you know which channels are routinely copy-protected?

I think the whole reason for the question is that the Sky box doesn't have a SCART. If it did, I reckon he would have already tried SCART - SCART ...

How can a DVD recorder be analogue? Surely there's a big clue in the full name of DVD, Digital Versatile (or Video) Disc.

I presume that leapyear is referring to the input signal to his DVD recorder being analogue via a SCART cable.

Older technologies such as SCART or Composite Video are analogue.

HDMI is a more modern digital communication technology.

His DVD player makes a digital recording on a disc but the source is analogue.

Some manufacturers did develop a HD version of SCART but that was not available on the Panasonic DMR-ES10.

Use something like the above if your sky box doesn't have a SCART output.

You can record analogue on to DVD, I've done a lot of VHS to DVD via SCART years back with a DVD recorder.

Refers to the fact that this model of DVD recorder contained a TV tuner, in this case an analogue tuner, just as VCR recorders had. It no longer functions of course.
