Your original question was effectively  where to get an Android tablet that will get upgrades for more than 3 years. The unfortunate answer is nowhere.
Yes OP might be best to just keep an eye on a deals page [like this] each day and wait for an attractive deal to turn up.  Probably best to wait for the new year sales now

@Sandtree "Never had an Apple computer that didnt last at least 8 years and was running well until the day it died (3 years is my record for a PC, maybe get another year or two out of it by switching to Linux)."

I was using my windows PC, bought in 2008, as my main machine until a couple of years ago. It was nothing special - cost £250 - and I added some RAM and a SSD. It still runs Windows 10, but rather slowly. Clearly, YMMV.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?
  • keep your old tablet and get a pi, use vnc and or rdp on both keep on trucking , just a suggestion

I was running my iMac bought in 2008 until last year and it ran fast for anything other than video editing... my only complaint of it on a speed front (given I almost never edit video) was the fact the fastest external connection was Firewire 800 which is clearly slow compared to USBC or Thunderbolt. Obviously its a Mac so almost nothing was upgradable.

Doing Photoshop editing of a file thats a few hundred meg it was easily as fast as my 2019 Windows laptop (after transferring the file to the SSD in both machines) at the time and I'd argue faster in the highly complex filters being applied across large numbers of layers etc.

Clearly different folks have different experiences but all my Windows machines over the years have slowed and frequently failed long before any of my Apple devices. If you look at my client, they replace all Windows laptops every 2 years whereas Apple are on a 5 year cycle - unfortunately those that can have Apple machines are limited. The cost charged to the business is not vastly different for the different machines especially if you have the power user windows machine.

I'm just therefore confused as what the alleged planed obsolesce is in Apple products?

I really wish that Android devices didn't have a lifespan of about 3 years, before becoming effectively unsupported and obsolete. And I refuse to pay through the nose for Apple kit, which also has a limited lifespan, but longer.
It's not even like the hardware is unusable, it's the underlying software that becomes unsupported, and therefore a security risk.
    Indicative of our throwaway society?!!

In contrast, I'm typing this on a laptop which is about 8 years old, and running the latest Ubuntu operating system. Fully working, bang up to date security patches. I'll continue using it until it physically breaks down and I can't repair it.

After looking for a tablet recently myself, I agree.

I am delighted that an iMac that cost roughly 10 times the cost of my low end PC can still be used today. However, comparing high cost hardware with low cost hardware seems rather pointless, don't you think?   My 2008 PC, together with the one I replaced it with recently, together with the next one I buy, and probably the next after that as well, will all together probably cost less than your 2008 iMac. On the other hand, your iMac may have been much more fun to use. I certainly hope so, given the price differential!

However, I was just querying your claim that 3 years is your record longevity for PCs, as most people's last far longer. Whatever do you do to yours to wear them out so fast?

"If you look at my client, they replace all Windows laptops every 2 years whereas Apple are on a 5 year cycle"

I suspect that a reinstall of windows would be just as effective as replacement. However, when comparing against Apple laptops, are you comparing similar price hardware? That makes a lot of difference, even in a corporate environment.

No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

I've had both android tablets and I pads, Also had a kindle. My view is...
Would never get a kindle product again as it performed poor out the box and only got slower over the next 6 months.
Samsung the tab 10.1 (android) started off ok, but within 18 months it was so slow I had to buy another tablet.
Which is when I bought the I pad air 2, 5 years ago, still going strong not as quick as it once was and I'll need an upgrade in the next year I guess.

    Looking back at the costs....
    Kindle £80 / 8 months = £10 a month
    Samsung tab 10.1 £320 (iirc) / 18 months = £18 a month.
    I pad air 2 £400 (iirc) 60+ Months = £7 a month...

I know what I'll be buying in the next few months...

That being said if you so anti apple... I'd have a look at a surface pro if you like your drawing abilities..
