I have a package holiday booked to Germany this week. I have been diagnosed with long covid and therefore I'm unable to get travel insurance with a number of brokers and also money helpers all declining insurance. The trip to Germany now has an increased risk with their figures increasing as per the latest news along with the new variant. Long covid advice is that I don't travel. The company I am due to travel with have offered me only the option to cancel and lose all money or amend at a further cost of £150pp with the risk being there that this may happen again for future dates.
Where do I stand please? Can anybody suggest a way I may get my money back for the holiday? I can't travel without insurance due to risk.

Thanks

If you cancel, you will be subject to the terms of the contract you signed.

The time to obtain travel insurance is either before (have an annual multi trip policy in place) or immediately after you book your trip. No insurer is going to cover you after the event when you are already going to potentially make a claim.

Thanks. But even with insurance in place they aren't willing to cover the trip with the diagnosis I now have

Just to make sure I understand your situation correctly- do you have insurance or not ?

I did have but when I queried my situation and checked long covid was covered, they said cancel the policy as it wasn't and won't be covered

Also if you arranged insurance at the point you arranged your holiday did you have a diagnosis of long COVID at the time and did you declare it?

  • What do the terms of your insurance say about diagnosis of conditions after you took the policy out?

Normally if you fall ill after the policy is started that's not a reason to cancel it, that's a reason to make a claim.

So the key question is if you got long COVID before or after taking out the policy.

Note that this assumes you took the policy out before booking the tickets.

Otherwise there is little you can do, other than risk going.
  • I've had long covid before the insurance was taken out. The lady in the phone cancelled it for me stating that they won't cover it so I have no option. I just wondered if with it being a pandemic and very much out of my hands that I can get insurance, if any other options were available to take it further. I darent risk it for my health and the last article I read mentioned germany advising against travel to their country so I guess unless they refuse tourists, I stand to lose my money

Then you failed to declare a material fact to the insurers. Did you make the booking after as well?
  • No I wasn't diagnosed until after the booking.
