Thank you all. I managed move large files (biggest was photos) onto external drive and it worked.

OK, you've moved them somewhere else.

If they're of the slightest importance to you, you need to make ANOTHER COPY of them, double quick.

Drives can fail. If you have your photos in one place only, you can lose them all in one go.

Figure out how much space you need, get another drive of that size or greater, and make a second copy of them on that drive.

Surprising how much **rubbish** people have on their computer. Once spent over an hour deleting stuff on one. They had never deleted anything from day 1 -

    Buy a Mac.

    And this helps how?
Macs do get full hard drives as well, this is not a "one operating system is better than the other" thing.
Windows might get a load of stick for having superfluous "junk" in an installation but MacOS isn't any better in this regard.   A clean installation of Catalina requires around 12.5GB of storage while an upgrade requires 18.5GB (or up to three times more if you're upgrading to it from some really old version)

Bear in mind that this is not so much problem solved as problem postponed. Can I ask how much free space you now have?
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Spacesniffer is a neat little tool that gives you a visual idea of the size of files and folders on your computer, so you can target the ones taking up the most space.

I do think the comment was made tongue-in-cheek. ;-)
Retired at age 56 after having "light bulb moment" due to reading MSE and its forums. Have been converted to the "budget to zero" concept and use YNAB for all monthly budgeting and long term goals.

That’s what I had hoped. On other forums, buying a Mac seems to be the stock response to everything, that and using Linux.

That's because linux has the answer to everything, just look at Wikipedia, which uses linux on its servers. :)
