If you want the device purely to read books I would stick with Paperwhite as it doesn't suffer from the reflections in bright light that I have seen on many other devices.  I use mine mainly on holiday and can use it happily in light conditions where I can't see anything on a phone screen for example.

I replaced my kindle with a Samsung tablet.  The old kindle didn't have a back light so the tablet is 100 times better (and battery life is superior too).

Do tell which Samsung tablet has a superior battery life than a kindle I may have a look.

I suspect the poster has erroneously compared an old Kindle (worn battery) with a new tablet (brand new battery). :)

  • Again thank you all for your replies. Really good to hear that the adverts are only about 5 seconds when first switched on so not as bad as I thought. I can see some Amazon browsing when I get home tonight!

I got a Paperwhite in John Lewis on sale for a bit less, and was concerned as some reviews had made reference to the glitchy page turning and very short battery life. It hasn't been an important issue in the 3 months I've had it. It's needed charging once, and the pages do sometimes pause or not respond at all to a page turn request, and sometimes I catch the edge with my finger and turn forward or back a couple of pages. Not an issue. The backlit screen is the biggest boon over the old model - I love it.

One wish would be for it to possible to turn pages fwd or back on either side of the screen, like the old ones that had a pair of buttons on each side. On the new one press left to go back, right to go fwd. Fine usually but if you're propped up in bed holding the Kindle with one hand [therefore on one side] it'd be nice to have the option without stretching all the way across (and missing).

But really, they're great. I'd buy another.
  • Thanks for your reply username03725. Glad you’re happy with yours

I've ordered a paperwhite, should be here Thursday or Friday.  Thank you for your help and advice. Can’t wait for it to turn up.  I’m missing my old one.  I’ve had to read a proper book the last days and it was heavy 😂😂😂 xx

I charged my Paperwhite about 3 weeks ago but haven't used it since.  Just checked and battery is showing 65%.
