By comparing your actual monthly consumption month by month -  providing the meter reads shown on your bill are ACTUAL rather than ESTIMATED.  Post them in this thread (and include those letters A, C and E)
How do you send your readings
Thanks Robin9. Readings are sent on the website
    Electricity:
    01/10/21 16024
    01/10/20 14094
    So around 1930 kWh/yr

    Below are Gas
    01/10/21 7828
    01/10/20 7455
So around 370 cubic metres per year, say 4000kWh/yr (unless your meter is Imperial, in cubic feet?)
For an Ofgem-capped variable tariff, that would cost about £750/year.

On Ofgem price capped the electricity will cost around £490 a year including standing charge.

But we need to confirm if the OP's meter is indeed metric m3 or imperial ft3.  The gas standing charge would be around £90 a year, then:

    m3 370 units = 4200 kWh = around £170
    ft3 370 units = 11,900 kWh = around £480

So it's either a gas spend of £260 or £570, giving a total energy spend of £750 or £960.

Thank you QrizB and bagand96. This is just incredibly helpful.

I can't answer the imperial or metric question as the meter s outside in the dark but I can do that tomorrow. The tariff is called Standard SC DD. They claimed a couple of months ago this was their cheapest rate.

    Thanks for the billing info.
Between the 29th of October and the 25th of November you spent £37.47 of gas, and used 23 units. ~£7 will be standing charge so those 23 units cost you ~£30.
    • If the units were metric, 23 units are around 250kWh which would suggest almost 12p per kWh - unlikely.
    • If Imperial, 23 units are around 740kWh, suggesting around 4p/kWh - more credible.
It looks as though you're being billed for an Imperial meter. (You still need to check that it really is, every so often there's a mix-up.)
If the meter really is Imperial, as bagand96 says your annual bill is closer to £1000 and your monthly payments need to be increased to £80 to stand still. But you're also roughly £65 in arrears so E.On will want that £65 plus another month's payment on account - which comes to £145.
£175 and £82pm might be slightly more than we've calculated, but it's not entirely unreasonable of them to ask. And as Rodders calculated, if you don't have the £175 then raising the monthly DD to £96 will let you catch up in a year.

Elec of 01/10/20 is an estimate (meter reader a week later was 14121)  so 07/10/20 tp30/10/21 16141 =2020

    18/01/20 13015 to 21/12/20 14834 = 1820 (11 months) approx 1970

so your  electricity is not going down

    Gas 26/11/21 7860 ; 21/12/20 = 7533  = 327

    18/10/20 7258 ; 21/12/20 = 275 (11 months) approx 300

so your gas is also not going down

Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

It seems reasonable that the electricity might not be going down because we have always been frugal. But the gas is a bit baffling as we aren't using the gas fire at all this year and the condenser boiler is off nearly all day for the past few months. Anyway, thank you so far; I will check what the gas meter says tomorrow. Have a good night, you deserve it: your help and knowhow is really appreciated.

  • Morning everyone.
The gas meter is imperial -- it says cubic feet.

Thanks for checking. It seems like your annual use is closer to £1000 and so your DD should be around £80, and so E.ON Next aren't being wholly unreasonable with their request.

  • I like the use of the word "wholly", QrizB!

Have a new theory -- think our boiler's thermostat may be faulty as the water is either coming out "on fire"or lukewarm. Have called our service contract engineer. May save some money that way.

Qriz, do I assume you don't pay much for electrickery thanks to those PVs? If ever we move, I want to have some installed.

If you've got a service contract it's definitely worth making use of it to get your boiler checked out :)
I've had the panels for almost ten years and they've reduced my electricity use by around 1200kWh per year (I've made other energy-saving measures so I don't know exactly how much is due to the panels). At current prices that's a £250/yr saving on my bill, which is definitely welcome!

  • It was serviced in March but it may have developed a fault in the interim.

That's really impressive. It seems mad to pay for something you can get from the sky.
