Old Style Daily Sunday 28 November 2021

Gers

This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!
As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or SLOW internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred. When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.

Morning folks.Dawn is being very slow to make an appearance today though the bitter cold is back with a vengeance.Yesterday I did my shopping in short time. One shop, one bag and I was done. The rest of the was not so productive unfortunately. I lit the wood burner and mostly slothed away the day. My meal was a YS lasagna with a side helping of peas which was odd but I enjoyed it.Apart from the shop assistant and a quick phone call from a friend my day was peaceful. I'm beginning to get re-aquatinted with silence.I'm still under my duvet, there's nothing pressing me to get up yet, I'll wait here a while yet.Thoughts to our poorlies and missing, may things get better for you soon. Happy Sunday to all.14

Morning All
Bitterly cold here, it was snowing when I got up, dawn is breaking but I don't think there's going to be much light today. Decided not to drive up to see DS1 and the DGC, the weather will be worse north of here.
I'll take a walk to the recycling bins in a while but will give the shower a good scrub before I go, the tiles are a real pain - great for not slipping but the rough surface makes for tricky scrubbing! The rest of the day will probably be spent lazing around. I have a few cards to write to elderly relatives so will get those done ready for posting tomorrow.
Surprisingly the washing dried fairly well outside yesterday, just the bathmats to do today so they can go on the pulley.
Thinking of everyone, take care. XX12 -
Power went off here yesterday for hours so although I had an oil delivery no heating. Got the log burner going but too dark to read and of course no internet connection. So lucky that I live in a small village with an active what’s app group so lots of offers of help. Some more snow forecast for this afternoon but at least the wind has dropped. Will need to go out at some stage to right the bins and pots.
Think I might follow you GERS and get back under the duvet for a while13 -
Morning everyone and thanks for starting us off Gers I think everyone is having a late start don’t blame them it is freezing my son came and put the jump leads on the car yesterday it wouldn’t start because it never moves anywhere it needs a good run out we cancelled the breakdown as we had waited from before 8 in the morning and just kept getting text messages about how busy they were someone rang at 1.30 to say they hoped to be there within the next 3 hours hubby explained what had happened and off we went out i managed to get all the sweets and a little gift for my hairdresser so I was happy with that I am off to York next Saturday on a bus trip with a friend so I will finish anything else I need for presents from there we are counting our blessings we haven’t been affected by the storm so many people have no power on still and there has been so much damage a girl I know her static caravan has been turned upside down it is wrecked she is heartbroken but just grateful she wasn’t in it at the time she is there most weekends with her grandchildren lots of trees down here as well I can’t believe we got our new fence the day before the old one would have definitely have blown down and probably have come through the window.we are having chicken tonight with veg and Yorkshire puddings I forgot to take some meat out of the freezer so just picked a chicken up in Lidl yesterday I had a coupon for 10 pounds of 40 so I got my Xmas Turkey as well saved me a bit of money housework today and trying to stay warm have a good day everyone whatever you are doing11

Morning folks and thanks GERS. There's a bit of blue sky at the moment but sleet and -3 is forecast so the frozen snow won't be going anywhere today. I shall have to go out and throw salt on my front steps as they look hazardous and I don't want anyone breaking their neck on them!
Storm Arwen, through Friday night, brought us gale force wind and snow and if that wasn't bad enough it also brought power lines down and we were without power from 4.00 am to 9 pm yesterday.. Around 17 hours!!! So yesterday wasn't a lot of fun, no tv, radio and no wifi either so couldn't even pass time roaming the net. Fortunately I have a gas fire so whilst sitting in front of that I was warm enough but the rest of the house was blooming freezing. DS and DD's power was off as well but fortunately they both have gas hobs and ovens whereas I am all electric. They were very good and kept me going with flasks of boiling water to make drinks and a few meals on wheels. I told them not to venture out as the roads looked hazardous but would they listen! The 2 youngest DGD got dropped off at one point to keep me company for a little while. Sitting in the dark with candles all around was all very exciting for them, but no so for me!
So today I am venturing nowhere. Just sorting out yesterday's chaos and emptying the washing machine when it finishes washing the load that was put in yesterday morning waiting for the power to come back on. I was hopeful!! I also need to scurry into the garage and drag a few supplies out of the freezer for today's eats.
Like everyone else Dumpling and her family were on my mind a lot yesterday. Her family were her world, they will miss her dreadfully. I hope someone saw all the tributes to her on here and shows them to her beloved Steve. He did so much for Dumpling he will feel lost without her.
Have a good day folks if you can and ((HUGS)) for the poorlies, poorly loved ones, poorly pets too and the convalescing. Take care one and all stay safe if venturing out in the hazardous conditions. xx

Morning all BRRR its cold there is ice in the bird bath but no snow for us we seem to have escaped the high winds as well . Nothing much to report I may start wrapping presents but I am in no rush . I am collecting DS from the airport tomorrow but as yet we dont know if he will need a PCR as although announced no date has been given. One of the cases of the new variant is in the town where DD1 lives so very close to home for us . Right better get a shifty on i need to load the tumbler and unload the dishwasher that will probably be about my sum total of housework today .
Stay warm and safe whatever you are up to hugs to all our poorlies and those who are caring for poorlies a big bag of extra strength for those with worries . Take care one and all xxSlava Ukraini12 -
Morning all,
I have not posted for a few days, and was so sad to hear about dear Dumpling.Oh my, some of you have really had it bad with this storm, thinking of you all.
Not much to report on here, plodding along. As it is the first Sunday in Advent I am going to sit down this afternoon and get our Christmas cards written. I also need to give my mind to ordering gifts. This year it will be mainly gift cards or cash for the nieces and nephews as they are all grown up.
Thinking of you all, and take care.

Hi everyone,
Brrr, reading all your comments make me glad I'm now a Southern softie, I look back to my Lancashire childhood and wonder how we survived the winters which seemed a lot colder for longer. We had no central heating until after I went to university in 1976 and until I was 8 we only had an outside toilet. I remember going to the little outhouse with it's paraffin lamp lit to stop the toilet freezing.
We bought the tree on Friday but it is still sitting outside, I'm in two minds as to whether to put it up today or wait until Wednesday, I've never had a tree up in November before. I want to deep clean the living room before it goes up though. I did do the shower room yesterday and found all sorts of interesting mud lodged in crevices of the shower where Ziggy gets cleaned up after her walk.
I'm going to cook a beef brisket in the slow cooker and will take the leftovers down to L & B's tomorrow to have French dip sandwiches. We're going a day early because Laura is going into College on Tuesday to make up for a day she missed because of illness a few weeks ago. We may come home then or wait until Wednesday.
Not a lot else to say apart from wishing all the poorlies well.
Have a good day.

Good morning
Very cold here, was 0° when I got up🥶.
Finished painting the bedroom yesterday, just a bit of touching up to do, then clean down the woodwork again.
But first I need to clean the kitchen floor, for some reason one of our cats likes to take his food out of his bowl and eat it on the floor🐈
Have a good day🌻11 -
TA - what a nightmare for you, great family support though! I'm so pleased you're OK.
Poppy - a nightmare for you too, what a wonderful set of neighbours you have.My little corner of Scotland hasn't been too troubled by the storm apart from a couple of fallen trees though other places have had difficult times.Peony - thanks for the reminder about the first advent. I'll get out the advent wreath which my beloved DM gave me so many years ago. The German tradition is to light one candle a week until the nearest Sunday to Christmas when all four are then lit. On 06th December we'd get a little biscuit or sweeties from St Nicklaus, designed to build up the children for Christmas.I'll get dressed very shortly 🤭 when Radcliffe and Maconie finish.10
