So they need to isolate from when they arrive until the results of the test or to travel to leave the country.

In practical terms, if they stay with friends or family they shouldn't go out, but the other household members can come and go as they please. In fact the friends or family they are staying with could host a whole christmas party if they wanted to.

However the guest in isolation would not be able to attend the party -

“You should not have visitors, including friends and family, unless they are providing essential care. The only friends and family who you can have contact with are those who travelled with you or people who you are staying with.”

I guess no contact means no kissing under the mistletoe!

It means that if you are leaving to go on holiday on Tuesday and returning in a week's time, the lateral flow tests you have already spent money on are no longer valid. Once again this looks like a money making spin.
The company I ordered the Lateral Flow tests from will allow refunds. However as we need 'next day results' as soon as the news broke I ordered PCR tests in person at another company's local test centre.
The first company is now offering upgrades from Lateral Flow to PCR and has had the blatant cheek to say we have to re-send our refund requests at a later date to suit them 10 days later!!
Company name can be provided. Grrr.

Added stress is now provided by the second company because they have taken the money for my 'Arrival in UK' PCR tests booking and provided the receipt BUT NOT the test confirmation email which has to include the codes which we need to put on the Passenger Locator forms within 48hrs of flying. If we don't get those we can't board the plane -yet the tests were paid for 4 days ago.
Their phone line has been closed as they are "indundated and can't cope" so all you get is a useless robotic system which eventually says it 'will transfer your enquiry to a human colleague who will get back to you': Ive tried a few times and still not had that contact. If you're un-lucky then you get replies to emails which don't even address the query. Whatever happened to Customer service?

Perhaps you would have been better to enquire about the upgrade to PCR tests from the first and original company rather than rush and rebuy from a second new company. You have added complexity and I feel created the issues you now face.
