You havent said what budget and whether new or used, but my FIL has a Nissan Note and loves his. Easy to step in to, easy to drive, not too big, economical.
Comes with an auto box too.

jimbo6977, Thanks for the suggestion, we have today been and ordered a Suzuki Ignis.
We went with a new one, as the price difference between that and a newish second hand one wasn't that much for what we wanted.
Hopefully delivery in March/April (I know, I know, I work in the industry and know all about the semiconductor issues).
Dealership was a delight to deal with, even, shock horror, addressing most of the questions etc towards The Wife when it was known it would be her car.
Means I have to put off changing my car for a couple of years more :'( , but as they say, happy wife, happy life.
