My understanding is that YouTube doesn’t support slide shows. You have to convert your slide show into a movie, which of course YouTube does support. 

A slide show consists of a series of still slides plus instructions for PowerPoint to transition between them. That’s quite small, even for say a couple of dozen slides displayed over 20 minutes. For a movie, a complete screen's worth of information needs to be stored 60 times a second.

He says he uploads the movies, and then sends the links to the family. Is there an online slide show thingy that he can use instead of YouTube?

any online "drive" eg OneDrive GoogleDrive Dropbox(maybe not: -low storage + cost)  mega etc
