How long to do the packing?

How long do you allow for packing when moving? When (and where!) do you start? My removals company offer a packing service but for various reasons I’d rather do it myself. Any hints or tips? Two bedroom terrace house with no garage or garden.

  • How much crap have you got? The more crap the longer it will take.

Whn my parents moved last time they bought sturdy plastic boxes that stack, was far far easier to pack than cardboard.

I do tend to have lots of crap! I also have a lot of books etc but fortunately I cleared the loft a few months back and I’m hoping to dump a lot of junk

We moved from a three bedroom terraced house with a garden and shed (two of us plus cat). We didn't start packing until we'd exchanged and had completion date (two week gap). We were relocating from Berkshire to Cumbria and we'd had a thorough declutter before we went on the market (which helped a great deal). It took us around 10 days to pack everything (at a leisurely pace). The removal company supplied the boxes and packing materials and I'd certainly recommend that if possible.

At least a few months - as you've found already.  Clearing and sorting stuff to take / donate / dump.

NB Plastic boxes often get damaged in removals ;).  It's the odd shapes.  Cardboard boxes are reusable and recyclable too.

Pay for the packing service and only pack stuff yourself that is so precious you'll be taking it in your own vehicle.  It's often really worth it.
  • Each time we move we have found it cheaper to donate / sell / get rid of than to book removal people.

We usually need vans etc for white goods, but as it was just the two of us last time we actually gave away our huge double fridge freezer to a neighbour who was about to buy one, as it was cheaper than removing it professionally and bought a new one, and a piano not used by our daughter for years as she's left home and doesn't want it cluttering up her place!

A bit extreme I know and it depends on how many of you there are and how much stuff you have, but I try to reduce packing up things I will never use again.

so time wise, only take what you really want and need, could save you time packing.

I started 8 weeks before our proposed completion! We had furniture to sell and lots to declutter though. My actual aim is that packing won't take that long if we know that 100% of the items in our house can just be packed without having to think about keeping them. That's the thing that takes the most time.

we are no where near completion yet and my partner started as soon as we had an offer accepted, she's a bit of a control freak when it comes to stuff like that but we have already got rid of anything we won't be taking and lots of other stuff is already in boxes.
  • I had loads of junk as I'd been in the flat for 38 years and accumulated tons.
Kept staring at it and doing nothing so paid the extra for the removal company to pack.
I was just too lazy to do it myself.

If you pack everything yourself and something gets damaged they may not be liable.

I always get the removal firm to pack kitchen things and all glass and china.

I live in a 2 bed but have little clutter. I think only the kitchen will take time and the rest will be relatively quick.
I am confident I can pack my house up in 2-3 days doing it lesuirely.

It really depends how much stuff you have
