Lloyds Bank - Internet Banking activation code letter(s) not received

Opened Lloyds bank account on 18 October. Received debit card at the start of November and a couple of other letters concerning the switch. Switch was completed on 26 October. 

As I hadn't received the activation code letter, went online and requested another one on 13 November. Called Lloyds bank support on 16 November to ask if there was some other way of activating internet banking. She said no, that's the only way. Also, she said requesting an activation code cancels the previous one. So even if I receive the first code now, it's not valid. 

Waited and waited. On 23 November, nothing received. So, I phone Lloyds support again. A different agent checked and said the requested activation code was definitely sent out on 13 November. However, contrary to what her colleague said on 16 November, she was able to suggest a workaround. She requested a telephone banking activation code. If the Internet banking activation code doesn't come through, and the telephone banking one does, she said call back and she would be able to sort something out re. internet banking activation.

So, now I'm waiting for both the (2nd) Internet banking activation code and a telephone banking activation code. The agent I spoke to on 23 November said Internet Banking activation code should arrive within 5-7 working days. It's now 10 working days. 

Of course, without being able to go online, I cannot do things like setup a direct debit (DD) with PayPal. One of the two DD's needed is already there as it was a DD that moved across from the switch.

Trying to setup another one (through Paypal), but seems impossible without being able to log on to Internet Banking. Even after verifying account with the code Paypal sent (I was able to get this by calling lloyds customer support), still when sending a payment, I'm asked to login to the lloyds bank website (don't know if this is due to this being the first payment).

    When I opened my Lloyds account (online) I registered for internet banking as part of the process.  They didn't have to send any activation codes.  

    Why do you need to log into your Lloyds account to set up a Direct Debit?  Don't you just give PayPal (or whoever) your sort code and account number, and they set up the DD?

    Was able to set up PayPal DD with just account number and sort code (as in the past). Although they try to nudge you to login to Lloyds internet banking and link the account that way. 

    I even confirmed account (DD) with code PayPal sent with the small payment into Lloyds account.  Still when I attempt to send a small payment (about £ 2 ) PayPal is asking me to login to Lloyds internet banking. 

    Edit: Just did a test. Added my TSB current account to PayPal wallet the old school method (just using account number and sort code). Paypal sends £0.01 payment to TSB account with a code. I login to TSB android app get the code, then enter it on PayPal to confirm TSB account. 

    However, when I try to send money (just £0.01) up comes this prompt (the same one we see when we add an account - but this time it's pretty much the only option - the second option now is to use a different account) :

  • I've just changed my payment options on PayPal, from a Barclays credit card to my Monzo current account. I entered the bank details and got an instant notification from Monzo saying "Paypal active account check" or something. That was it, payments are now taken from that account.
    I came into this world with nothing and I've got most of it left.

    I've just changed my payment options on PayPal, from a Barclays credit card to my Monzo current account. I entered the bank details and got an instant notification from Monzo saying "Paypal active account check" or something. That was it, payments are now taken from that account.
    When you say 'payments are now taken from that account' - have you received a confirmation letter from Barclays credit card or a credit card statement that confirms the next payment will be taken from Monzo?

    No. I don't know if I am understanding if there are different types of PayPal accounts here. When I place an online order and checkout with PayPal, I am asked to log in to my account, then sent a code by text which I enter, press pay and the money immediately comes out of my Monzo account. 
    I don't receive money by PayPal, so I don't have to withdraw anything. When I am given a refund, it goes straight back on to my debit card.

    These payments are debit card payments, or refunds, not payments from my bank account, if that makes sense.
    I came into this world with nothing and I've got most of it left.

    Sorry, I was getting confused with using Direct Debit to pay Barclays credit card statement balance, which has nothing to do with PayPal. 

    Interesting that the money comes out of your Monzo account immediately. Wasn't aware a direct debit could do that (as opposed to a debit card transaction, which can do it).

    If a refund goes back on to your debit card then it seems that was the method used initially for payment. Are you sure a transaction paid using Direct debit can go on your debit card when it comes to refunds?

    I don't have any direct debit set up, it is a debit card payment, just as it would be with any other retailer.
    Paypal don't have any details of my bank account, just debit card number, exp date and security number.
    I came into this world with nothing and I've got most of it left.

    activation letter finally arrived and I was able to register for Internet banking and also setup the Paypal direct debit (as I'm now able to login to Internet banking).
