Amazon, Prime and gift card question?

I tend to take advantage of the prime free trials throughout the year and have always been able to pay for goods using my gift codes when doing so.
Tried to place an order yesterday, and it gave me the free trial (even though I said no, but that's another issue.) However when I came to pay, it would not let me use the gift card with the Prime delivery and when I ticked the box asking for more information i got a message about not using gift cards to buy gift cards because of fraud.
Except I wasn't buying gift cards, I was buying dog food.
The only way I could use the codes was to cancel prime and order using the free standard delivery.
Just wondering if it was an amazon glitch, or whether they have some new rules around prime free trials and using gift cards/codes that I wasn't aware of?

All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
