Smart Meters / IHD’s / Wrong Tariff

Options
EDF fitted us with a Smart Meter at the end of August.  It was fine for 6 weeks until we signed up to a new tariff in Early October.  Since then the Smart Meter and the IHD have continued to show our daily spend based on the OLD Tariff. I have complained to EDF but they say they cannot update our Smart Meter with the NEW tariff.  They say it can only be done by the “network owners” and that it will eventually change.

This whole situation is simply unacceptable.  Does everyone have this problem when they change tariff with the company that fitted the Smart meter?  We have a SMETS v2 meter.

Thanks

When your tariff changes, EDF have to send the info to the DCC (the "network operators") who then send it out to your meter. It usually happens within a day or two.
I take it from your message that you would normally find the daily spend information useful?

  • Yes. It’s a bit misleading at present because our day units went from 15.5p per unit to 23p so the IHD is showing us a lower daily spend than we are actually incurring.  We changed tariff on Oct 6th over 6 weeks ago!  Sounds like they haven’t sent the info to DCC despite telling me there’s nothing they can do at present.

All you can really do is try EDF again, hope to get a different CS rep and ask them if they can refresh your smart meter tariff info with the DCC. (Note I don't know if this is something they can actually do, but there's no harm in asking!)

  • I escalated the complaint so it’s with a senior complaint handler so I’m passed the std CS reps!

My Smart meter showed the tariff of my original supplier, BG, from when I left them in Jan 2018 until Sept. 2019. Now it shows a daily charge of 0.00p and no kWh price. I'm with my 4th supplier after Avro went under. I know the rates as it's on my Octopus account dashboard.
Someone please tell me what money is
  • When a supplier takes on responsibility for a smart meter on switch then it has to send out security certificates to the meters. These certificates prevent A N Other from communicating with the meters. Once this has been done, then the supplier can send out tariff information to each of the meters. CS is wrong to say that this is a DCC responsibility; however, it is correct to say that the DCC Network is used to transfer the tariff information. FWiW, I transferred my gas supply from Octopus to Zog 3 months ago and the tariff information had been updated by midday on the day of the transfer of supply.

I only ever look at the number of units used on mine, never the actual cost.

I have given up chasing EDF to get our IHD working correctly. Ever since we switched to their GoElectric tariff in July (previously with EDF on an Eco7 tariff) it stopped displaying anything, other than a waiting for data message.
But thankfully in our case the Smart meter was correctly enabled remotely on the day of the switch with the correct time of use prices and the new standing charge.
They just keep fobbing me off with talk of software updates and that it will happen some time soon.

I can live without the IHD but it was handy to spot when the consumption was particularly high and to figure out which appliance/s were using the most electricity.

The usage data stopped being displayed on my account page on the EDF website at the same time and the section where you enter meter readings reappeared. I am now entering the two readings manually every month so there are no surprises on the billing!
Meantime I set up a Bright App account and can view the consumption data on there.
  • Does anyone know how to use buttons (A) and (B) on the smart meter to view the tariff?

I wonder whether our Smart meter is actually programmed correctly but the IHD is not picking it up properly?
