text charges to Channel Islands and Isle of Man for +447xxxxxxxxx numbers - why?

How do you know that a mobile number +447xxxxxxxxx is a text to the Channel Islands and Isle of Man and subject to a charge?

That I can find there is nothing to distinguish a UK mainland mobile number from a Channel Islands and Isle of Man based number, so you incur charges without any knowledge until your monthly bill arrives with extra charges. Surely that is wrong?

  • From Google:

Mobile telephone numbers provided by Isle of Man operators Manx Telecom and Sure Isle of Man are prefixed with the national dialling code 07624 followed by a 6 digit number that allows 6 digit dialling when calling on the Island.

    As for the Channel Islands.....

We sometimes call  a relative on the IOM and are charged for the call or the text. Whilst it seems a bit sneaky neither the Channel Islands nor the IOM are a part of the UK which is usually the zone for charge free calls.
